Buchanan Hit The Nail On The Head

Let me make one point before getting to the meat of this post: I dislike Pat Buchanan. Not personally -- he seems like an interesting character -- but politically, I find him to be a destructive force and I rarely pay attention to anything he does. However, last night he filled in for Joe Scarborough on MS-NBC and interviewed a number of people on the Swiftvet story. Buchanan scored a direct hit when dealing with Lanny Davis and really focused on the damage that Kerry's numerous lies have done to his credibility -- or should be doing, if they got the coverage they deserve.

Here he speaks with Lanny Davis, who appeared on Kerry's behalf:

BUCHANAN: But let me read you this. All right, hold it.

Now, if John Kerry lied about being in Cambodia, if he lied about being on a secret mission like Martin Sheen, if he lied about not being in Kansas City when he was there when they all chatted about that crazy assassination idea, if he lied about Americans committing rampant war crimes all over Vietnam which he witnessed and which were authorized by his superior, if he lied about all those things, is it not possible he lied about his medals?

DAVIS: If, if, if, could‘a, would‘a, should‘a. And none of those things are true.

Hmm. FBI files put lie to his earlier contention that he had resigned from the Vietnam Veterans Against The War in the summer of 1971, before the Phoenix Project (the assassinations of eight pro-war US Senators) came up for debate at their November 1971 meeting in Kansas City. In fact, Kerry attended that meeting and two witnesses (one of whom works in his campaign) put him in the debate prior to his resignation at that time from the VVAW. Kerry himself retreated from his original statement in March:

Senator Kerry of Massachusetts yesterday retreated from his earlier steadfast denials that he attended a meeting of Vietnam Veterans Against the War at which a plan to assassinate U.S. Senators was debated. The reversal came as new evidence, including reports from FBI informants, emerged that contradicted Mr. Kerry’s previous statements about the gathering, which was held in Kansas City, Mo. in November 1971.

“John Kerry had no personal recollection of this meeting 33 years ago,” a Kerry campaign spokesman, David Wade, said in a statement e-mailed last night from Idaho, where Mr. Kerry is on vacation.

Starting to sound like a pattern?
