Pat Oliphant, the syndicated cartoonist whose work appears in numerous broadsheets across the US, published an editorial cartoon that attempts to paint the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth as a bunch of drunk, wannabe sailors stooging it up for George Bush. Apart from the execrable Ted Rall, Oliphant may be the most disgusting example of left-wing character assassination in American politics today. Here's the cartoon, which the Minneapolis Star-Tribune saw fit to reprint in today's edition:

In Oliphant's world, men like Paul Galanti -- who suffered torture for his country during his seven years as a POW in North Viet Nam -- are nothing more than drunkards indulging in resume-padding, in a gross reversal of reality. This is such a disgusting display that I find it difficult to describe it in polite terminology. Suffice it to say that Oliphant has aligned himself with the same quality of people who spat on veterans returning from honorable service because of the slander and lies of people like John Kerry. In Oliphant's twisted viewpoint, the experience of a man who endured the worst privations of Hanoi's torture for seven years is somehow trumped by a man who managed to finish only one-third of his one-year tour.

Who's the wannabe? The man who survived seven years of torture, or the man who has been telling stories of Cambodian Christmases and stealing the actions of officers like Lt. Ted Peck?

Oliphant is decribed by his home site as a Pulitzer award winner "acknowledged by many as the nation's most influential political cartoonist." The Pulitzer committee should make sure they see this entry in case they ever consider him for another award. If your local newspaper carries this trash, make sure you let them know that you won't stand for it.
