Today's New York Sun publishes an original column by Edward Morrissey -- okay, me -- regarding the myth of the stem-cell research ban that John Kerry perpetuates in his website and on the stump:
In the wake of Ron Reagan's appearance at the Democratic Convention, Senator Kerry has tried to make stem-cell research a featured policy difference between Mr. Kerry and President Bush. His campaign Web site talks about "ideologically-driven restrictions" from the Bush administration and promises to lift the "ban on stem cell research."In a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed piece outlining his economic plan, Mr. Kerry writes that he will restore America's competitive edge by working to "end the ban on stem-cell research." In fact, it may be the most consistent policy stance of the entire Kerry campaign.
The only problem for Mr. Kerry is that the ban doesn't exist - and he knows it.
In my column, I explain the differences between various types of stem-cell research and how none of them are banned, or even banned from receiving federal funding. According to the National Institute of Health, where I found most of the background information and where the Kerry campaign has obviously never looked, scientists can get federal funding to research approved embryonic stem-cell lines -- a resource first implemented by George Bush.
The article does require registration. I plan on posting my entire column late this weekend, but in respect for my friends at the Sun, I won't post it until the next edition of the Sun goes on line. As I posted a couple of days ago, a subscription to the Sun would not only give you access to some fine journalism and great stories, but it supports those who support the new media.
I look forward to reading your feedback on the column!
