Canadians Among The UIC

A handful of radical Islamists fleeing the collapse of their grip on Somalia have fallen into Kenyan custody as they attempted to cross the border. Two of the ten captured carried Canadian passports, the CBC reports:

As many as two Somali Islamic fighters who claim to be Canadian were among 10 fighters arrested by Kenyan police, according to separate reports Tuesday.

The 10 were arrested on Monday at the Liboi border crossing in Kenya as they tried to flee Somalia, the Kenya Daily Nation reported.

Two were reportedly carrying Canadian passports, while the remaining eight were said to have Eritrean passports. According to the newspaper, all 10 militants were being detained in the Kenyan town of Garissa. It is not known whether they have been charged.

Canada Press reported just one of the men held a Canadian passport. Still, Canadian authorities have to wonder how many more of the UIC troops routed out of Somalia by the Ethiopians might wind up back in Canada rather than in a Somalian jail. The US might be asking the same question.

UPDATE: Maybe Canadian documents are too easily exploited, as JiHymas notes in the comments. I doubt that the UIC has the same political connections as the Israelis -- or at least I'd hope not.
