Why Is Ron Paul’s Campaign Paying Alex Jones? UPDATE: A ‘Partial Refund’?

The question of what Ron Paul represents has burned through the blogosphere this week, followed shortly afterwards by a revelation about an apparently unsolicited donation from a white supremacist. Today brings a much more revealing look at the Paul campaign, as Hot Air and MVRWC have discovered a payment from Team Paul to Alex Jones — the 9/11 Truther leader — for $1300 in “services”. Allahpundit notes:

Assuming it’s the same Alex Jones, which seems a safe bet, pray tell what might that payment have been for? The likeliest explanation is that it’s some sort of service fee, either Jones doing something on behalf of the campaign or allowing the campaign to do something using his property. Either way, I’m mighty curious to know what special service might have been provided such that Paul’s people couldn’t have gone elsewhere and gotten the same deal from someone who isn’t a degenerate conspiracy theorist.

This goes much closer to the heart of Paul’s direction. While anyone can contribute to a political campaign, the choice of where the money goes is directly and completely relevant to an analysis of the candidate. If Paul chooses to help fund a 9/11 Truther, voters can reasonably conclude that Paul has sympathy for the paranoid conspiracy theorists.
The Paul campaign really has to explain their support of Alex Jones, more so than they need to explain the David Black contribution. So far, they haven’t explained either one.
UPDATE: Paul’s campaign says it’s a refund of a campaign contribution. However, Jones donated $2,300, and the payment is for $1,300. Why only refund a portion of the contribution? Why would a candidate send back money except to distance one’s self from a contributor, and why would a partial refund do that? That makes even less sense than some of Jones’ conspiracy mongering — and Paul continues to appear on Jones’ radio show, as David Freddoso notes.

  1. We New Yorkers are eager to learn whether Dr. Paul is himself a GOP “truther”. The “truthers” were out in force down at Ground Zero on the anniversary of 9/11.
And if anyone could provoke violence from the families and friends of the victims of 9/11 for an obnoxious, hateful, and vile message, it’s a “truther”. I witnessed some near-violent confrontations at Ground Zero between the “truthers” and some FDNY veterans.
If you’re a “truther”, Dr. Paul, you can write off New York right now.

  2. The Firefighters on You Tube have an interesting story for you.
Truth what is that? Surely no one knows anymore because they don’t admit they lied for years after the fact.
You people are grasping at straws when it comes to Dr.Paul…wait till the skeletons come out of the closet on whatever canidate you are backing.
Paul has a clean history something none of the other candidates can claim. The are all bought and paid for and don’t represent the real people in America

  3. So Ron Paul has a ‘truther’ on his payroll. Rudi has Norman Podhoretz. Personally I think that’s worse.

  4. Why Is Ron Paul Paying 911 Truther Conspiracy Nut, Alex Jones?

I’ve sympathized for Mr. Paul on several occassions and defended his personal mental state from that of his followers. I’ve stated before that he can’t help how nutty his fans are, and that just because so many of them think the U.S….

  5. Ummm… not to rain on your parade, but there are a lot of Alex Jones in the world. In fact, if you google the name, on the first page you’ll get a web designer by that name. Just possibly, Alex Jones got paid $1300 to do some work on Ron Paul’s web site. Maybe Alex Jones is the name of the guy that mops the offices at night. Who knows?
But don’t let little things like not having any real facts keep you from spreading gossip.

  6. “If you’re a “truther”, Dr. Paul, you can write off New York right now.”
I’d say, count the entire Tri-State area! Plus relatives and friends of the victims who live in other states.

  7. “If you’re a “truther”, Dr. Paul, you can write off New York right now.”
I’d say, count the entire Tri-State area! Plus relatives and friends of the victims who live in other states.
Heck: write him off for President. Anyone who thinks he’s “the country’s salvation” should be given a Zoloft prescription ASAP.
The “truthers” are a disgusting bunch. Call them “Americans no more”.

  8. When I first heard of some of Ron Paul’s positions, I liked what I heard. But then, I found out he was the candidate of choice for the truthers so I started reading up on Paul. Then, I saw him speak at the debates. The man is a loon being supported by a bunch of loons (the truthers).
All I can say is, I was there every day before, during and after 9/11…it sucked. It sucked because of moslem terrorists. We are doing the right thing fighting them in the Mideast rather than here at home.
I really can’t wait till Ron Paul has to pull out of the campaign so we can forget about him and the truthers….

  9. Why is Ron Paul even making a dent?
You know, I’ve never watched the show “Survivor.” But I heard about it. As it required audience participation; where people at home called in. Sort’a creating a “Perils of Pauline” moment for those who kept getting chosen “to stay.”
I think each debate, too, draws bigger crowds. (Who knows? Word-of-mouth about Ron Paul? To see if he survives the jabs he gets from others?)
Some day, ahead, after our elections are over, in November 2008; following the first Tuesday, after the first Monday …
Will people begin analyzing the stuff we’ve been watching, now, and up to now … As what the results will ring in?
Let’s say, for instance, that lots of republicans see Ron Paul as “harmful” to their candidate’s debate. (But not disliked, just yet, by the audiences that are tuning in.)
Wouldn’t you think “a better way” has to be found?
Mike Gravel, on the Bonkey stage, gets no traction at all.
Here? This skinny guy is getting to be as popular as Don Knotts.
Sure, the show is definitely over once the major primary votes take place; and, it seems that at least ten to twenty states “pick their nominee.”
How did Ron Paul get to be so notice-able?
There are a few on the nomination stage, that if you flashed their picture, people wouldn’t identify the candidate by name.
What can you do with Ron Paul, now; that wouldn’t make all the other nominees look like the skinny guy terrified them?
Don Knotts. Just the model for a “competent cop.”
    What can you do?

  10. Between this and the lazy post yesterday on David Duke, I’m puzzled by the alternating hatred and contempt Paul receives from “mainstream Republicans” like Morrissey, who otherwise have no problem with direct promises from candidates to “double Gitmo” or bomb Iran?
If Paul is so crazy, so vile, and so obviously fiendish, why bother linking to one Hot Air hit piece after another? Why not go after one of the Rudy McRomneys, who should be the ones so-called “citizen journalists” should go after? After all, they clearly have a better shot of actually becoming President and bearing responsibility for the lives and deaths of countless citizens. Fixating on a protest candidate looks a lot like you’re trying to change the subject.
Are you frightened by the concept that some Republicans aren’t enthusiastic supporters of using 9/11 to justify every bone-headed military operation America gets ourselves into? Could it be the 9/11 card is wearing thin from overuse?
And since you’re so concerned about GOP candidates associating with racists and the mentally unsound, where was your concern when rightist blogs made a big deal about Bob Jones University’s dean endorsing Mitt Romney? You know, from the school that had a problem with interracial dating until a few years ago?
It’s a lot of questions, and maybe I can get some answers that don’t involve casually insisting that Ron Paul’s insane.
    DU

  11. This is much ado about nothing. Paul is about as squeeky clean as you can get. Reminds me of how in Soviet Russia they would always try to have a scandal of corruption for the guy who was actually a reformer while leaving the biggest crooks running the show.
Guliani and all the rest of them have about a buttmillion examples of pandering for votes. I don’t agree with Paul on everything. But he’s the real deal. Too good for Washington anyhow.

  12. Capitano,
What we have here is definitely a case of truthers in broadcasting.
    There’s also this little tidbit.
So, perhaps Teresa’s right and Alex Jones the janitor got the money, but, regardless, there’s something going on here between Ron Paul the Presidential aspirant and Alex Jones the truther.

  13. Ed,
Don Black endorsed Bush in 2004. Bush did not “renounce” him. Does that make Bush a neo-nazi? By your logic, it does.
Re Alex Jones: so no one can associate with 9/11 Truthers or they’re instantly unacceptable? Well, I guess we can’t watch “Two and a Half Men” because Charlie Sheen is a Truther. I guess CBS should “repudiate” Sheen, except that he just won an Emmy and it’s one of the most popular shows on TV.
This really is the worst you can find on Ron Paul? Then I know he’s going to win — and I suspect you do, too.

  14. Jeez, more wasted news print on a nobody.
Ron Paul has zero chance of being president. His ideas have been around for twenty years. The only reason they are being touted is in hopes of starting a third party candidate to help Hillary get elected with 45% of the vote, much like her husband did, twice.
That why folks like Teresa et al pretend to like him. As to the folks that genuinely like Paul, try to see the world as it is not as you fantasize how you would like it to be. If Paul is delusional enough to run as a third party candidate and you vote for him, you are voting for Hillary. I don’t care what your conscience says, you are responsible for what your vote actually does. Hiding behind the canard that there is no difference between the candidates means your grasp of the issues is too shallow.

  15. Patrick,
If Ron Paul really had zero chance of becoming president, Ed and many other wouldn’t be attakcing him. No one attacks Tancredo or Hunter, after all.
Ron Paul has a very good chance of becoming president, which is what worries the neocon establishment — and they should be worried, since the Ron Paul Revolution has struck a chord with the American people.
Just wait until the Ron Paul Money Bomb hits on Nov. 5th — it’s going to be an historic event. And Captain Ed and others can scour the donor list on that day for people they find unacceptable!

  16. Ron Paul, Candidate of the Insane

Just so ya know, credit for finding the Alex Jones payment from Ron Paul, if you’re here from Hot Air or Captain’s Quarters, goes to one of my anti-Paul/anti-troofer friends at digg, COINTELPROAgent (a facetious name to bait the troofers, i…

  17. FZappa:
“Don Black endorsed Bush in 2004. Bush did not “renounce” him. Does that make Bush a neo-nazi? By your logic, it does.”
The Capt didn’t request Paul to renounce anyone, he suggested an explanation was in order if this is indeed the troofer Alex Jones.
And I guess you fail to see the difference between Bush receiving an unsolicited campaign donation and Paul possibly using his donated money (some of yours?) to fund a troofers delusions. Bush didn’t nothing to recieve that donation, Paul actively, and with full knowledge of where it was going, paid Jones.
Color me unsurprised coming from someone who obviously supports Paul.
“Re Alex Jones: so no one can associate with 9/11 Truthers or they’re instantly unacceptable? Well, I guess we can’t watch “Two and a Half Men” because Charlie Sheen is a Truther. I guess CBS should “repudiate” Sheen, except that he just won an Emmy and it’s one of the most popular shows on TV.”
First thing you’ve said right all day… you’re exactly right, anyone who gives any of the troofers more than the time of the day I will shun like the black plague for concern their delusional BS would rub off.

  18. Ron Paul has a very good chance of becoming president,
This is deserving of all the mockery that can be mustered. A guy who is an asterisk on most national polls, and who draws the most support from wacked out lefties who hope to draw away enough votes to slide their sleazy candidate into the White House to steal the silverware, AGAIN.

  19. Then I know he’s going to win — and I suspect you do, too.
You are delusional in the extreme.
Make sure you have your psych meds filled, because I predict mass hysteria when reality sinks in and RP is thrashed in the primaries–if he lasts that long.
No one attacks Tancredo or Hunter, after all.
First of all, there are plenty who “attack” Tancredo, but the point is, there’s really no need to because their supporters aren’t delusional, deranged morons crapping up the internet. And nobody’s attacking Duncan Hunter because most conservative bloggers agree with him, like him or at least respect him. That’s not the case at all with the Reverend Doctor Saint Ron Paul the Messiah and his evangelical disciples (aka TROLLS).
Keep dreaming, cult kiddies. It’ll be fun to watch you cry when he gets thrashed in the primaries.

  20. Zappa,
Get some counseling if you really believe what you typed. Paul isn’t even going to get the repub nomination. Trust me when I tell you this, most people put Paul out there with the Roswell and the “grassy knoll” folks. Does he deserve that? The answer is irrelevant. That’s just where he is.
You have a better chance of growing dental floss than he does of getting elected.
Why the Captain runs these stories is any one’s guess—mine is, he’s just stirring the pot for some laughs.

  21. FZappa – “If Ron Paul really had zero chance of becoming president, Ed and many other wouldn’t be attakcing him. No one attacks Tancredo or Hunter, after all.”
    Really, no one “attacks” Tancredo!!
Excuse me while I unsheath my Cluebat….
Capt Ed (April 4, 2007) “Why Tom Tancredo is not a Serious Candidate
Do us all a favor, go find another PaulBot poll to game.

  22. I like some of the Libertarian ideas. Some, not all. I mostly like the notion that the gov’t should get out of our lives and let the private sector handle the country’s needs to the greatest extent possible.
But, I sure strongly disagree that Ron Paul has any chance of becomming President. Just look at the man. He has no “presidential timber.” He’s skinny and tiny. He looks like a strong wind would blow him away.
Plus he’s as weak on national security as the Left.
The American voters, superficial as they are in who they choose, would never vote such a feeble and frail looking man into the Oval Office.

  23. Ah, the squirrels are out of their trees again.
Earth to Ron Paul supporters: have you seen the polls?
In the two most recent polls, Paul is nothing more than a blip. In last week’s LA Times/Bloomberg poll, he finished 7th with a whopping 2 percent, or 30 points behind the front-runner. In the Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll, he got 1 percent, good enough for dead last. He didn’t even make the October 12 CBS News Poll, and CNN/Opinion Research also had him at 2% the same day. The “best” he’s managed is 5% in the Oct. 12 USA Today/Gallup poll.

  24. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS SUPPORT COULD GO BACK TO BEFORE THE OKLAHOMA BOMBING AND WHY MCVEY WAS QUICKLY PUT TO DEATH TO COVER WHAT IS REALY GOING ON NOW WITH CERTAIN CONNECTIONS AND IT NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT TO LIGHT BEFORE IT`S TOO LATE TO TURN BACK ?

  25. Oh, come on Del Dolemonte. Pat Paulson ran for president. He was a character on Laugh In. And, he was running against Nixon in 1972.
Ron Paul, alas, has name and face recognition.
    Mike Gravel does not.
And, at least five of those on the republican nomination stage, would be a hard “match face to name” game.
I wonder if we’re gonna look back, someday, and see that you can run into trouble if you do too many polls. And, too many debates.
With too many people ON the stage!
That great one-liner from Reagan. In 1980. Said to the elder Bush, as he tried to limit the debate participation … was “I bought these microphones.”
He only had to make one purchase. Not go back to the store for dozens more debates.
    And, up ahead?
After the primaries are over; I’m sure the TV world will get to become “serious.”
    And, then?
    The front runner versus Hillary.
What if she’s seasoned, now, as a politician? And, “rested.”
What if Bill sits in the theater. And, gets to be on TV.
Have too many primary debates affected future outcomes? And, how many more primary debates will there be? Have the candidates, themselves, gotten hooked?
Like appearances on American Idol? (Not that I watch TV! Only that amateur nite’s become a “big deal.”)
And, what works? Caller voting. You just dial a number.

  26. Well Patrick, I think the evidence speaks for itself. I restate my earlier point: if Ron Paul isn’t a threat, why not ignore him instead of manufacturing these weak attacks?
Time will tell which of us is right.

  27. It’s a lot of questions, and maybe I can get some answers that don’t involve casually insisting that Ron Paul’s insane. DU
Insane isn’t the right word. But given the fact that the Iraq war is now past the tipping point and al Qaeda is being destroyed in Iraq, cluelessly uninformed fits him (and his Republican supporters) perfectly. His Democrat supporters are simply engaging in smart politcs)
Essential reading for those who want to get a clue on Iraq:
    http:/www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2007/10/osama_bin_laden_on_t.php
    http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2007/10/iraq_was_al_qaedas_greatest_ac.asp
    http://www.powerlineblog.com/
We are three quarters (or more) through a war we are winning -and in which we are destroying our mortal enemy-and the centrepiece of Ron Paul’s campaign is that U.S. should not have gone to war.
If the Iraq war is not going well a year from now it doesn’t matter who is the GOP nominee, the next president will be Rodham Clinton.
If the war is going well the GOP has a good chance- so long as it runs a strong articulate “pro war” candidate-someone who can champion the mission and explain that if the U.S. had not removed that genocidal maniac he would, the moment sanctions ended, again have turned his efforts to developing nuclear weapons.
In the meantime, Democrats (and Kos and George Soros) will continue to support Paul’s candidacy. And why not? It undermines the coherency of the GOP message on defense.

  28. FZappa:
“I amend my comment to “very few people attack Tancredo and Hunter.”
Well thanks, but you forgot to mention it was by the most influential of any of the right leaning blogs. If you don’t think that hasn’t resonated throughout the political junkies that are among the most likely to vote you’re sadly mistaken.
Considering you’re all about making wild predictions, i.e. some kind of Paul bomb on Nov 5, I’ll make one of my own.
Loonbat Paul is such an embarrassment on the national stage he will never be elected to anything above dog catcher in his home state again.

  29. Carol Herman said:
“Oh, come on Del Dolemonte. Pat Paulson ran for president. He was a character on Laugh In. And, he was running against Nixon in 1972.”
    Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Pat Paulsen first ran against Nixon in 1968. He also ran in 1972, 1980, 1988, 1992, and 1996 (when he actually finished second to Bill Clinton here in New Hampshire).
And he was never a character on Laugh-In, he was a writer and performer on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He later ran a vineyard in northern California.
FYI, Pat’s campaign slogan was “Just a common, ordinary, simple savior of America’s destiny.”
He originally ran representing the Straight Talking American Government Party (AKA the STAG Party).

  30. Neither Ron Paul nor Alex Jones needs to explain a damn thing.
This government needs to answer the following questions about 9/11/2001:
    1. Why did WTC 7 fall straight down in controlled demolition fashion?
    2. Why did the lease holder, Larry Silverstein, say in a 2002 PBS documentary that he thought the smartest thing to do was to “pull” the WTC 7 building? “Pull” is slang for controlled demolition of a building. The excuse he later gave that he was referring to a firefighter team doesn’t hold water, because all the firefighters were working at the remains of the Twin Towers at the time.
    3. How does almost all the concrete in the buildings turn to powder without a huge energy source?
    4. Why were the Towers’ steel beams cut into small pieces as the buildings came down?
    5. What happened to the inner core structure of the towers if the floors “collapsed?”
    6. Why was there molten metal in the basements of the buildings for weeks and months after 9/11? Jet fuel does not burn hot enough to melt steel.
    7. Where was our Air Force that day–why weren’t any of the “hijacked” planes intercepted?
    8. Why was the military performing drills of hijacked planes flying into buildings while the supposed “real” hijackings were going on?
    9. Why did FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) fly into New York City the night before 9/11 to conduct a bio-terror drill, and was conveniently on site to “go into action” on 9/11?
    10. Why do many of the firefighters, policemen, paramedics and civilian witnesses report hearing, seeing and feeling huge explosions in and around the buildings? Transcripts available at http://www.nytimes.com.
    11. How could all those cell phone calls from the passengers been placed when the planes were so high up in the air?
    12. Why was there only a twenty-foot hole in the Pentagon when it was hit, when a passenger jet is much bigger than that?
    13. Why no damage to the Pentagon lawn?
    14. Why aren’t we allowed to see video from any of the dozens of cameras around the Pentagon that morning?
    15. What was Marvin Bush’s role in this as one of the board of directors of Securacom, the company handling security in the Twin Towers and the airports that the “hijacked” planes took off from?
    I’ll stop here for brevity.
Answer these questions and we will have a basis for further discussion. But you won’t, because personal attacks are all you know how to do.

  31. “The Paul campaign really has to explain their support of Alex Jones, more so than they need to explain the David Black contribution.”
Is this for real?! Who the fuck cares !

  32. Wow. I guess FZappa wasn’t doing the job so the Paul campaign sent in Tim Sharpe, who really ought to read this before he gets too far into the bowl.
I won’t exhaust myself trying to address all the stuff Sharpe has subjected us to, but (in addition to the Popular Mechanics article I cite above, we can deal with another. The “20 foot hole” meme has already been debunked in many places on the Internet — some with pictures of the full extent of the damage to the facade of the pentagon where the 757 hit. (Sadly, I can’t put the link to the photos I found because the Captain cans any post with more than one link). Just Google the two terms “initial impact hole” and pentagon to see the photos I found and the analysis describing those photos.
Please, Tim, just go back and report to your superiors that you were unsuccessful. Leave us sane people alone.

  33. Tim Sharpe
All of your questions -and all of the other questions asked by you nuts have been answered at screwloosechange, and other sites.
Think of what you are saying. We know that al Qaeda carried out the attacks of 9/11 and we know that the attacks were planned several years in advance.
So you are saying that the Governor of Texas committed treason by conspiring to attack his own country. For what reason? So he could liberate 58 million Muslims?
He risked execution for treason for what purpose?
And he was able to pull this off-and get al Qaeda to keep the secret even as his troops are devastating al Qaeda in Iraq. Wow, He’s not just the president. He’s a god.
And not one of the many thousands of people who would have been involved in this conspiracy has broken from the ranks -and yet he couldn’t get disaffected cabinet ministers to shut their traps. He successfuly conspired to attack his own country but he wasn’t able to plant WMD in Iraq.
Bush has had several cabinet ministers quit and blab but every single person with knowledge of the conspiracy has kept silent? Do you know how crazy this make you sound?
Are you aware of the psychological phenomenon known as projection? Get help.

  34. Yes! Del Dolemonte. I tried to correct that!
Nixon got two shots at running for president.
Alas, Laugh-In was done in by our government in 1971.
Pat Paulson was a “serious” candidate in 1968!
Oh,my. I am just terrible with dates.
And, ya know what? Nixon appeared on Laugh-In, before the show went kaput. No. Not in drag. Like Guiliani’s performance on Sat. Nite Live. (Of course, Guiliani got to slap Donald Trump in the face; which may be what hooked him to wearing a blonde wig. And, a gown.)
Wouldn’t you wear the outfit, if it allowed you to strike Donald Trump in the face?
Pat Paulson, by the way, didn’t win. In 1968, Nixon won it.
I guess I was trying to show that Ron Paul has about the same chance as Pat Paulson.
Pat Paulson got a lot of TV mile-age out of his campaign, too.
Where, all Ron Paul has is name-recognition, above that of Hunter, Tancredo, Brownback, and a few others. All vying for the same prize.
It’s not as if people aren’t watching.
As to Irak. It’s not lost on me, that we’ve spent #3-trillion dollars. Hey, what’s a price tag, when you got to remove Saddam’s head?
As to Al-Qaeda, seems they’re back in Afghanistan. As the Taliban. What’s going on with this war thing, where we can’t slap the bad guys to eternity?
And, the saud’s just provided Laura with her own burka. As if sitting on a couch, with four women covered in tablecloths, is a sign of America progress.
    Geez. My head’s spinning.

  35. Ohhhh you’re really onto something here! LOL
Congressman Paul has an advertisement link up on Alex Jones’ prisonplanet.com, that’s where the money is going to. Trying to make something out of nothing are we??

  36. Whew. Nixon’s line on Laugh-In was a close up where he said “Sock it to me.”
Ya know, discount the stuff about “how the Towers fell.” Separate from the planes that plowed into those two buildings. Where the saud’s took full advantage of their special visa program. Supplied by the white house.
There’s the fact that when the Towers were built, there was the use of thousands of pounds of cement, placed at the top. To stabilize the buildings from the winds. This added weight it what helped the buildings come crashing down.
And, I’m not giving the saud’s a pass on that!
    It could have been worse.
The Twin Towers sat in a bathtub. Where if the Hudson broke through; the entire underground subway system in New York City was at risk.
Gee. I’m glad Guiliani is a candidate for the presidency.
And, I”m glad Bill Clinton didn’t put up with the hecklers, either.
“HOW DARE YOU” … is one of those responses that crosses the aisle. It’s an American response. Has nothing to do for the party you’ll be voting for, ahead.
On the other hand, raising questions aout Irak, isn’t gonna get squelched. Ya know why?
    Bush hasn’t made the sale.
    Man can’t close.
And, that’s a bigger shame than anything Ron Paul says.
    Someday?
    People will debate the debates.
    There’s lots to talk about.
Like why does Guliani have to convince social conservatives? What’s it gonna cost?
Heck, Reagan came in after Jimmy Carter proved to turn off so many AMERICANS. He collected votes from the MAINSTREAM. He collected votes Barry Goldwater never saw!
In 1964, LBJ won in a landslide. Barry Goldwater was ROUTED.
And, when Reagan was asked by a reporter, if he had “changed” and become a John Bircher. Because the conservatives were now on board the Reagan train. Reagan said “no” he didn’t adopt the Bircher’s platform. But it sure looked like the Birchers were adopting the Reagan platform.
Heck, back in 1860, Lincoln made sure to differentiate himself from the abolitionists cause!
Again, the old WHIG party, the one from which Lincoln had jumped. Was known as the “conservative party of its day.” And, it died. It didn’t even field a candidate in the mess of 1860.
We got to that mess because? Too many southern interests were served by presidents like Buchanan. Who left office, in 1860, laughing that he was the last president of the United States.
    Not quite.
But special interests are very expensive.
Americans tend to deal with this stuff by going STALEMATE. Divisiveness tends to produce an inability to go foward.
And, poor Guiliani. Pandering away his lead.
    It’s such a shame.

  37. OK, bear with me for a moment …
If Paul is buying advertisements on Jones’ websites ….
It means he is *endorsing* Jones and his lunacy.
    You couldn’t figure that out?
Thank you for playing, and thank you for confirming that Paul is doing exactly that.

Something out of nothing? Paul is spending his campaign money wisely. He knows that the same nuts -and they are that- who support Jones, may support him.
Are you always this helpful Rich?

  39. Captain Ed,
Taking money from advertisers means “endorsing?”
Gee, haven’t I seen Hillary’s face on the right hand side of your blog? Maybe, just at others? But it never struck me as “endorsing.”
As to Ron Paul’s “stature” … given that he’s a member of the HOUSE. All he has to do to satisfy the requirements of getting elected (which he has done repeatedly). Is get citizens in his district to toss him their votes.
Our US Congress has known some doozies through the years.
Heck, that Ron Paul raises money is just proof that in the market place, if you’ve got the right corner, you can sell anything.
I also don’t think Ron Paul, as a “vote-getter” is a threat to anybody on the nomination stage.
On the other hand, as a character, with a schtick, he’s turned the debates into something of a comedy routine.
    How does that help ya?
Hillary’s not facing such a calamity. Her stature only grows.
(By the way, there are still no guarantees. I have an avocado tree, out back, that blossomed with hundreds of fruits. Then? In August’s heatwave, it took it all to trash.) I mean, you get no guarantees. Not even with the weather.
But at least there are generals, who when there’s no battle, do stuff that keeps their troops primed.
And, other generals? Incompetents. Who manage to do everything wrong. Before the troops engage.
Ron Paul, now, is a “fact of life.” He lasso’ed the debate no one else was having on stage. And, it hit a nerve. Of sorts.
Wanna trounce Ron Paul, make the sale that the $3-trillion to remove Saddam’s head makes sense. Include what you know about Bush. And, his wife’s new burka outfit.
Would you be surprised to learn that there are many distressed Americans? Not quite digesting what we’ve watched these past seven years?
Why think Jimmy Carter was the only idiot to ever hold the Oval Office? The saud’s and their money, have bought a few American politicians.
Nope. They didn’t buy Ron Paul.
Maybe, we can make them a package deal?

Now, Timmy, I would advise you to lighten up and watch this:

  41. “I’m puzzled by the alternating hatred and contempt Paul receives from “mainstream Republicans” like Morrissey, who otherwise have no problem with direct promises from candidates to “double Gitmo” or bomb Iran?”
Wow, the normally astute ‘mechanical eye’drops a confusing stink bomb of a post.
Cap’ns hit on Paul struck a nerve.

  42. Wherever Paul’s name shows up on the blogospher the Ron Paul zombies are there. Things must be real good in the U S of A if we are taking the Whig Party cadidate seriously.

  43. “Then I know he’s going to win — and I suspect you do, too.”
Now I know you’re a nutjob — and I suspect you do, too.

  44. “Don’t miss Ron Paul on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Tuesday Oct. 30th!”
If I throw a stick will you go away?

  45. “Truthers” are an important part of the Paul strategy. Afterall, it has worked well for the dhimmies. Just check and see how big dems like Rosie have siezed onto this.
Paul is just trying to be the wackjob candidate for left and right.
Defeat him in Texas i the Spring.

  46. Zappa, you stated:
“Well Patrick, I think the evidence speaks for itself. I restate my earlier point: if Ron Paul isn’t a threat, why not ignore him instead of manufacturing these weak attacks? Time will tell which of us is right.”
I do ignore Ron Paul. The captain doesn’t for entertainment purposes. As to your larger point about the possibility of Paul being president I can only repeat what I said earlier:
“You have a better chance of growing dental floss than Paul getting elected”.
Get some counseling so that you are not so bitter when it comes time to pull the lever for Rudy in November 08.

  47. I searched the actual FEC document you reference, and found a completely different explanation:
The only item I found under disbursements is to one Alex Jones of Austin, Texas (presumably the same individual) and is for a CONTRIBUTION REFUND…
That is so completely different than what you report, should you retract? Or, did I miss something?

  48. This really is a matter of integrity. You post a link to what is essentially a photocopy of a page showing payee, but you omit critical data one can use to understand the item in question.
It was a CONTRIBUTION REFUND you ninny!

  49. Why don’t you come down off of your pedestal? You don’t want a Constitutionalist for POTUS. You want a politician. Why don’t you do an expose on the “so called front 4” and their contributions from Log Cabin GOP, their support for Homosexuals special rights, their support for abortion, and their support for gun confiscation.
Ninny! that is a very proper term for people like yourself.

Well, Popular Mechanics addressed all of these, consistently. Go ahead and pick a fight with them.
    http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/1227842.html
Oh: and don’t give me the “Chertoff relative” stuff. The editor and Chertoff are not.
And mind you: I’m usually with engineers almost every day, even though I’m not one. Every time the “Truther” stuff comes to the table, they laugh – LAUGH! – at the gullible, ignorant people who believe that junk.
That means, if Ron Paul believes that junk, he deserves to be responded with crickets in any Presidential debate.
No one likes to debate with ignorant idiots like the “truthers”. It frustrates the debater and annoys the idiot.

  51. Tim Sharpe:
“How could all those cell phone calls from the passengers been placed when the planes were so high up in the air?”
Have you read the latest info regarding these calls written by Griffin? In the Moussaoui trial, detailed evidence was given regarding the calls made on all the flights. Go here and download Exhibit P200018:
    vaed.uscourts.gov/notablecases/moussaoui/exhibits/prosecution.html
Many claims were made about cell phone call from high altitudes in the media, but when it comes down to the FBI making statements in a court of law, they only admit to 2 calls, both of which were made at low altitude.
For the famous calls made by Barbara Olsen to her husband Ted, the FBI showed only one call attempt being made by Barbara, and that one was “disconnected” and lasted “0 seconds”. Basically, when the FBI had to make a statement under oath, they were forced to admit that Ted Olsen lied. No mention about this in the MSM. Not surprising, huh.
Here’s some discussion of the issue:
    911truth.org/article.php?story=20071009102819394
    pilotsfor911truth.org/amrarticle.html
BTW, you’ll never get anyone here to engage in rational discussion on the issues. All they can do is point to the pathetic Popular Mechanics book, which none of them have read.
    newton:
“I’m usually with engineers almost every day…they laugh…”
What are their names? What type of engineers? Here’s a list of many “troofer” engineers, including Hugo Bachmann, PhD and Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology:
    patriotsquestion911.com/engineers.html
He is not laughing. So tell me some names of people who are laughing.
BTW, you do not have to be an engineer to educate yourself on 9/11. You need moderate or better intelligence, you actually need to read extensively about the issue, and you need to have an open mind. Some on this site may have the first quality, but I highly doubt if any have done the reading (including your engineer friends), and I know for a fact that noone here has an open mind. That’s why there will never be serious discussion here. You can only point to the 3rd grade level PM book that you have not read.
The engineering knowledge you need to understand 9/11 can be gained by non-engineers by reading. It is very easy for a non-engineer to know more about the 9/11 engineering-related facts that an engineer would. Again, it takes reading. This is true in any field. For example, I am a pharmaceutical chemist. I know something about the Cannizzaro reaction, because I have done a few. However, if you wanted to read about the Cannizzaro reaction for a couple hours, I am sure you would know much more than me, and would be able to teach me a lot about it. So don’t give me the I know an engineer crap. Would you like to actually talk about a 9/11 related issue by going over the facts? Better yet, have one of your engineer friends post here. He can have a good time using all of his engineering knowledge to make me look silly.

  52. Tim, several people addressed your delusions; ad nauseum. It is simply a matter of you refusing to live in the real world as opposed to your own head–a very good argument against legalizing psychoactive drugs.
Prove to me that you are not an alien space robot. I know you are and I know you’ll ridicule and deny the question. Anyone that denies it is clearly in league with your builders.

And not one of the many thousands of people who would have been involved in this conspiracy has broken from the ranks -and yet he couldn’t get disaffected cabinet ministers to shut their traps. He successfuly conspired to attack his own country but he wasn’t able to plant WMD in Iraq.

Seven CIA Veterans Challenge 9/11 Commission Report
    excerpt:
William Christison, a 29-year CIA veteran, former National Intelligence Officer (NIO) and former Director of the CIA’s Office of Regional and Political Analysis also describes the 9/11 Commission Report as a “joke” and offers even more outspoken criticism. In a 2006 audio interview[4] he said, “We very seriously need an entirely new very high level and truly independent investigation of the events of 9/11. I think you almost have to look at the 9/11 Commission Report as a joke and not a serious piece of analysis at all.”

  54. Tim,
Ok, you can report to your superiors that you were successful, if that will make you go away.
Here, I’ll give you one: “The 757 airliner was actually diverted to a secret US Air Force base near Washington after it launched its missiles at the Pentagon, and when the plane arrived at that base, its pilot and all the passengers were executed and their bodies were buried under the tarmac on the runway at the secret base. The airplane itself was then blown up and parts from the airliner were distributed around the pentagon to make it seem as if the plane had actually crashed at the pentagon.”
If you want, I can even add a sentence alluding to black helicopters. Or we can have the plane not be blown up and just be used to transport prisoners for the CIA. Your pick.

  55. The more I read from these “Truthers”, the more I admire the Popular Mechanics editors for showing them as fools and charlatans.
Like Jack Russels or Sanitation workers going down holes to clear out the vermin and sewage — this Bud’s for you!
    –furious

  56. OK, here we go again. Another attempt to smear Dr. Paul with a “guilt-by-association-with-no-substance” argument that is totally absurd.
Welcome to the next molehill that isn’t a mountain. Pass the rat posion.
Then to make things interesing, the anti-Paul spambots comeout of the woodwork and the truthers some out as well, and the whole thing devolves into yet another “what-happened-on-9/11” argument that accomplishes nothing. Even if that was an inside job, or even if the “official” version of events is not what really happened, and I make no comment on those either way, then what can we do about it over 6 years later? Nada.
Getting back on the topic of this alleged scandal involving Dr. Paul and Alex Jones, I can say this: There are a lot of expenditures to corporate entities on there, iuncluding ExxonMobil and Applebees. Does that mean he endorses them as well, or does it mean he got gas at one of the Mobil stations for his rental car and ate lunch at one of their restaurants? There is more here than meets the eyes, and in the absence of those details, those who would seek to smear Dr. Paul by associating him with conspriacy theorists do the same actions of those conspriacy theorists they despise by that very assocaition! In other words, “Pot, this Kettle. You are Black!”
So, as usual this is another foolish attmept to smear Dr. Paul with nothing behind it. If the anti-Paulistas are that desperate, then I’m optimistic as that means we’re winning and they’re on their last legs and this is all they’ve got.

  57. Here’s a question about 9/11…
Why does Bill Clinton – whose wife would profit if it could be convincingly tied to Bush – know who’s responsible & Ron Paul types don’t?

  58. Ron Paul is gaining support daily. Money is pooring in. We the people who care about this country support him. This country is going down the tubes and the last thing we need in a Billary or a Giuliani.
Ron Paul has no control who donates to his campaign and at least he’s not for selling out our country to mexico (LaRaza) like Billary is.
The man is so honest people don’t know how to take it. I love Ron Paul!!

  59. $1300 of Alex Jones’ $2300 donation was refunded, per the FEC disclosure. (See the update to my post.)
But why only a partial refund? I’m guessing RP sees a need to distance himself from troofer scum, but not COMPLETELY disavow them. If he did, his support base would all but disappear.
    I love Ron Paul!!
That’s nauseating, mainly because it’s typical of the Ron Paul Cult. What next, cyanide-laced Kool-Aid when he loses? Black sneakers and purple shrouds to take you to God when he loses?
If the anti-Paulistas are that desperate
Honey, you can’t even begin to understand why we’re “anti-Paulista,” obviously. It’s not desperation, it’s irritation at having troofers, white supremacists, and other nutcases have a seat at the table–OUR table–through their cult leader, Ron Paul. It’s irritation at the cultists crapping up the internet and the overall debate. We’re sick of your drivel.
“First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they just hate your guts. The end.”
    –Not Gandhi, just the truth.

  60. Oh, and to “FedUp”–
If Ron Paul is so honest, why won’t he return the whole donation? Why won’t he come out and unconditionally denounce Alex Jones and other conspiracy theory scum? Why won’t he demand Stormfront and David Duke stop shilling for him? Why won’t he condemn everything they stand for? It’s either because he’s trying to have it both ways or he actually shares their opinions.
Look how the racists and troofers are saying “he has to keep quiet about it so he doesn’t scare the liberals/neocons/Jews/blacks/mainstream Republicans” (everyone with an ounce of humanity).
He is shameless, because everyone knows who supports him and if he doesn’t denounce the scum, he is NOT being honest (unless he actually does support them). It’s basic logic.

  61. do you know every thing that there is to know? i highly doubt anybody knows even 1% of anything. so in that 99%, dont you think that there could be fact to alex’s theory?
see, if alex siad there was gold in china, and you said he was nuts, of course ther is no gold in china, alex would just have to find one piece of gold to be right. you would have to search all of china and if you found it you would be wrong.
perhaps you have not looked hard enough, or read a history book at any point in your life.

  62. What’s So Offensive About 9-11 Truthers?

    Some more insomniac blogging.
Bill Clinton was giving a speech somewhere and ended up getting heckled by some Truthers (being involved in the Ron Paul movement, that’s what we call them).
    As Liveleak puts it:
    Clinton’s 50-minute speech,…

  63. More Ron Paul Hanky Panky

Bad enough that he’s allegedly received donations from a Nazi hate group, but now he appears to b…
    Popularity: unranked [?]…

  64. Tannin,
We have Ron Paul appearing on Alex Jones’ show. We have Alex Jones making a $2,300 campaign contribution to Ron Paul. And, last but not least, we have Ron Paul buying $2,000 worth of advertising on Alex Jones’ show. And, for some strange reason, we have Paul giving back $1,300 of the $2,300 to Jones.
The results: the equivalent of a $1000 payment by the Paul campaign into Jones’ truther coffers.
So, there is indeed some sort of quid pro quo going on, and all your ad hominem arguments against us “anti-Paul spambots” doesn’t decrease that finding one whit.
And the reason we detest Paul has quite a bit to do with Steve and Tim Sharpe truther posts above. He’s funding those guys, and hence won’t get my vote.
