NARN, The State Fair Finale

The Northern Alliance Radio Network will be on the air today, with our six-hour-long broadcast schedule starting at 11 am CT. The first two hours features Power Line’s John Hinderaker and Chad and Brian from Fraters Libertas. Mitch and I hit the airwaves for the second shift from 1-3 pm CT, and King Banaian and Michael Broadkorb have The Final Word from 3-5. If you’re in the Twin Cities, you can hear us on AM 1280 The Patriot, or on the station’s Internet stream if you’re outside of the broadcast area.
Today, we’re holding our last State Fair appearance, and it’s been a blast. Tune in to see what mischief we cook up at the Patriot’s booth, south of the Horticulture building on Judson.
Be sure to call 651-289-4488 to join the conversation!

  1. Sounds interesting. Maybe if I have time, I will meander over to AM 1280 The Patriot’s website to check it out.
P.S. On a completely unrelated note. You should probably bump that post (or make a new post) you made yesterday about the three Democratic Presidential candidates making a pledge to not campaign in states that violate DNC rules.
    John Edwards
    http://www.johnedwards.com/news/press-releases/20070901-four-state-pledge/
    and Barack Obama

    have signed the pledge.

  2. Off topic but perhaps useful for the radio show discussion and future commentary.
At 11:45AM National Review Online posted an article by Karl Rove on Bush 43 and how the media portrays Bush (and other presidents. He discusses his view of Bush 43 despite the activist media efforts against them both.

  3. Captain,
When they designed your style sheets, they added specific fonts to the styles.
I personally prefer sans-serif — a lot. Yours is the first site that has made me uncheck the “allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my own selections, above.
By the way, “georgia” is a microsoft font (literally), so linux (and, undoubtely, MacOS) chooses a substitute anyway. It would be best to define the fonts in terms of points or pixels, but leave the choice of font to the user. That’s what you used to do, and what most of the major sites do as well.

  4. Sounds like a great show, sorry to have missed it.
Will you have a taped – pod version to hear the show if we missed it?
Hoping all the CQ readers and the Captain have a pleasant weekend.
Personally, this poster is somewhat struggling with the conception of prospects for 2008.
It just seems deeply concerning, that some want to return the unethical likes of Hillary Rodham and Bill Clinton to the White House.
As we near the 9-11 Anniversary, how could anyone forget about the negligent 8 years which led up to the horror of that tragic attack in NYC.
And yet, still, today, many Conservatives seem more eager to debase the imperfect GOP, than to stop the corrupt, misguided efforts of today’s Democrat.
I suppose if I could have called the show, this is what I would have wanted to speak about.

  5. Brooklyn,
All of our NARN shows are podcasted at Townhall. It usually takes a couple of days for them to show up. However, if you hit the Patriot’s stream at 8 pm CT Sunday night, it should replay the entire 6 hours of NARN.

  6. By the way, “georgia” is a microsoft font (literally), so linux (and, undoubtely, MacOS) chooses a substitute anyway. No. They don’t.
That’s old school thinking. They usually use ems, a relational font size, which allows the user’s browser to more easily resize everything depending on the user’s visual needs.
Georgia is a Windows font and additional fonts should be declared, definitely. I suggest Georgia, ‘Times New Roman’, and serif as adequte.
I think his serif font best suits the look and feel of Captain’s Quarters considering the old time nature of that. But as I mentioned in a previous thread, it would be SO trivial to make a stylesheet switcher to give people the option of the old blue theme and image if they wanted, just for coolness.
Instead of that, assuming the Captain prefers his new design and wants to keep it as one for color scheme for branding purposes, I do agree it would be a nice touch to including a small text link at a a minimum to a PHP stylesheet switcher that could switch the fonts to: helvetica, arial, gadget, non-serif, for you and for the many other people like you who prefer these fonts.
I LOVE Palatino Linotype and the other serif fonts… but I reluctantly switched to the above selection for my modern rounded corners, etc., new business design… it fits it.
Anyway, good comment! If you wanted that stylesheet switcher to give people the option of non-serif fonts, it could be added so quickly. Also, other serif fonts should definitely be defined (trivially easily) or your design will NOT look as good on a Mac or Linux box.
Yeah, I just checked your stylesheet. Where it says ‘Georgia’, serif, you should change it to:
Georgia, ‘Times New Roman’, serif (the single quotes should not be there unless the font has more than one word in its name).
This is quite an easy — and important — change.
Where it says Arial, sans-serif, you should change it to:
    Arial, Gadget, sans-serif.
Also important, especially for Mac users. Super easy to do too!

  7. Or better yet:
    Helvetica, Arial, Gadget, sans-serif
Helvetica has almost the same spacing as Arial, but is better looking. Basically, Microsoft copied Helvetica, but changed it enough so they didn’t have to pay royalties to have it on their OS.
If you like Arial, and it’s fine, then instead change it to:
    Arial, Helvetica, Gadget, sans-serif
… which gives a good presentation in many different operating systems and will look exactly identical to what you have now in Windows.
