Now The DLC Embarrasses The Star-Tribune

Saturday, the Star-Tribune ran an insipid editorial regarding Senator Norm Coleman’s call for the resignation of UN chief Kofi Annan for the incompetency and corruption at Turtle Bay, especially for the Oil-For-Food debacle. The Strib called Coleman’s request “a sordid move,” accused Coleman of being nothing more than puppet seeking to “fawningly please … his GOP masters.” It finished by calling Coleman an “embarrassment,” all for demanding some accountability for the failures of the UN.
Now it appears that the Strib’s embarrassment may extend not just to the GOP but to the Democrats as well, as Instapundit notes this evening:

As we argued last week, one of America’s most urgent foreign policy needs is to retool international organizations and traditional alliances to provide collective security against the global threat of jihadist terrorism. The United Nations can and should be a central part of this new collective security system, but only if the organization is systematically reformed to serve that purpose.
Unfortunately, the United Nations’ credibility has been steadily eroded by its own misdeeds, with a burgeoning scandal over its incompetent and sometimes corrupt management of the Iraq oil-for-food program being the most damaging example. Last week it was reported that the son of U.N. secretary general Kofi Annan received a series of payments from a Swiss firm that won a lucrative contract under the oil-for-food program. This development has fed growing doubts that the United Nations will be able to own up to its problems or reform its operations so long as Annan remains at the helm.

The Democratic Leadership Council has echoed Norm Coleman’s call for Kofi Annan’s resignation, calling his retreat the price for UN credibility. The DLC recognizes that while Annan heads the UN, the scandal surrounding his son Kojo’s involvement in the UNSCAM corruption that put $21 billion in Saddam Hussein’s pockets will continue to discredit any investigation into the debacle. The Democrats need the UN to retain some credibility in order to argue against the supposed unilateralism of George Bush, and while Annan sits in the chair, that becomes more and more impossible.
So what next for the Strib? Do they accuse the DLC of being partisan shills for GOP masters? Will the editorial board make the insulting suggestion that the DLC focus on something more pressing, like recounts in Ohio? Or perhaps they’ll realize the only embarrassment in Minnesota resides at 425 Portland Avenue South in Minneapolis.
