Progressive For Racist Smears? (Update: Progressive Wises Up A Little Late)

Note: the site in question is now Not Safe for Work or family viewing. See Update III. 5:15 -- Now safe; see update IV.

It doesn't take long for provocateurs to crawl out of the woodwork to attack candidates, especially in stealth attacks. With Fred Thompson, they've apparently started before he officially enters the race -- and in one case, race is the operative word. Apparently hoping to confuse web surfers looking for Fred's website at www.imwithfred.com, a new site has appeared at www.imwithfred2008.com -- only this site welcomes people to the Ku Klux Klan, "Bringing a Message of Hope and Deliverance to White Christian America!" It includes links to a variety of disgusting racist sites.

Who would post something like this as a smear on Fred Thompson? Someone a little too stupid to cover his tracks, possibly? A DNS search gives us an answer. The domain name, registered through GoDaddy (no great shock there), belongs to:

Henry Reynolds
500 California Ave. #5
Santa Monica, California 90403
United States

The phone number listed on the domain record, which I won't post here, goes to an answering machine for the "law offices of Henry Reynolds". I left a message asking for comment on this website, and then decided to take a look through OpenSecrets and the FEC to see if Mr. Reynolds has a history of supporting Fred Thompson, or even the KKK. Actually, it turns out that a Mr. Henry Reynolds in the same zip code working as an attorney has a small record of political donations -- but in another direction:

  • 4/6/2005 - $500, MoveOn.org
  • 9/22/2004 - $500, DNC Services
  • 4/5/2004 - $250, John Kerry
  • FEC receipts for these donations can be found here, here, and here. They have the same address as the domain registration.

So why is a Santa Monica attorney and contributor to the Democrats and MoveOn hosting a website with links to the KKK and white supremacists? Perhaps he'll call back with an interesting explanation -- but it looks like he's conducting underhanded smear tactics in his spare time. Will MoveOn and the DNC reject the politics of character assassination and give back the money Reynolds donated?

UPDATE AND BUMP: Apparently, we got Henry Reynolds' attention. He has had GoDaddy change the domain registration information to list the owner as DomainsbyProxy of Scottsdale, AZ. Too bad I decided to cache the domain registration here earlier, as well as the website.

UPDATE II: Henry's real website can be found here. And guess where Henry's domain now goes? To the John Edwards campaign site! Is John with Fred, too?

UPDATE III and BUMP (5:00 pm CT): It appears Henry has gotten a little angry about all of the attention. The site now features a rather disgusting picture of ... well, I won't describe it, but let's say it represents Henry and his activities very well and very graphically. It is VERY MUCH not safe for work or family viewing. In fact, I wonder if Henry sold this off today to a hard-core porno company as a way to get out from underneath it. No cigar, Henry. Your name is still associated with this. Goat sex, indeed.

UPDATE IV, 5:15 pm: Heck, this is almost like live-blogging. Now the site redirects to a Wikipedia entry for Frederic Jameson, the Marxist literary critic. I guess this is Henry's hero. It beats the last redirect we got from him. I wonder what's next?

UPDATE V: I want to caution people about equating Henry "Goatse" Reynolds to all liberals. Our friends Jazz and Ron at Middle Earth Journal have a good post about this scamster, along with a great tongue-in-cheek "explanation" of the original website that made me laugh out loud. I've also changed the title to show the singular rather than the plural, for fairness' sake.

Ventura Distribution is going to LOVE this campaign season...

They're the ones who sell DVDs of the show Wiseguy, in which Thompson does a short plot-arc in which he plays a con artists shilling White Supremecist bullshit in order to con "true believer" rednecks.

Considering that multiple media outlets have already tried to use these clips to bash Fred as a racist, I won't be surprised to see clips of the speeches he gave on the show show up on websites like this as cheap smear tactics.

    Posted by FredRum | August 9, 2007 10:41 AM

This shouldn't be a surprise coming from the same kind of nuanced progressives that produced the Michael Steele Sambo smear a couple of years back.

this began a while back. some industrious members of the nutroots found an old episode of a drama show in which fred! played a white supremacist character named "knox pooley". it's sort of been their little nickname for him since.

    e.g.:
    http://clowncentralstation.blogspot.com/2007/05/wise-words-from-knox-pooley.html

    http://knoxpooley.blogspot.com/

one nutrooter laid out the "idea" thusly:

"It makes no difference whether HE believes it. The objective is to convince the VOTERS that he believes it. That's how swiftboating works."

You people are so suspicious and quick to assume the worst motives and intents and others. Has it crossed a single one of your minds that there's a completely rational explanation for this?

Did you ever consider that maybe Henry actually *is* a bigoted member of the KKK, but is also gay and his life partner's name is Fred? And 2008 will mark their first anniversary together? Hrmmm?

Bet you feel pretty sill now.

"So why is a Santa Monica attorney and contributor to the Democrats and MoveOn hosting a website with links to the KKK and white supremacists?"

Perhaps this is all a part of a "confidential" settlement he made to some NeoNazi group who sued him for defamation of charter? As his office is in California, anything is possible.

On a more serious note: I wonder how long it will take the Democrats to start accusing each other of receiving campaign contributions from a known raciest and who will be the first to demand that these donations be returned?

Posted by Rob Taylor | August 9, 2007 12:33 PM

Actually the Klan has come out in support of the Dems and Moveon more than once. A guy named Bill Levinson really led the charge on this, documenting all the "Klanny" threads on Moveon and to be honest when i'm stuck for a post on my blog I just go to white supremacist sites and scroll until I find a quote from Kerry or some other Democrat wedge in between all the race hate.

DailyKos diarist Heathlander has literally suppoorted the Klan before, and David Duke, the Aryan Nations and some of the smaller "white pride" groups are hooked in so deep with the anti-war movement that you can find their essays cross posted on Lefty sites. This is the main source of all the anti-semitism infecting the left.

So all though Jazz was joking, it actually could be true. At least on my blog I'll be saying it is...

I have to wonder if that address is genuine. If it is his law office, he's working out of his apartment. Nothing wrong with that, of course. But, plug the address into Google Maps and select "street view," and you'll see the addresses jump from 513 to 491 California. The addresses are only approximate, of course, but I wonder if he didn't register a false address.

(Side note: Google Street View is both neat and kind of disturbing.)

I think Henry Reynolds' #5 address is the fire hydrant on California Avenue next to the phone booth or as the canines call it: #2.

I'm not sure what to make of the fact that now if you do the same "whoisgodaddy" search, the registrant for the site is now listed as some Domains By Proxy, Inc. It shows that the domain info. was updated today, so maybe the owner, after having his name revealed publicly, is trying to cover his tracks by engaging a domain company to cover his name?

Posted by Joel Thompson | August 9, 2007 3:05 PM

Just a heads up. The registrant has apparently changed the whois information. The DNSStuff link you provided initially showed the information you posted; but when I hit refresh, it provides an entirely new name:

Registrant: Domains by Proxy, Inc. DomainsByProxy.com 15111 N. Hayden Rd., Ste 160, PMB 353 Scottsdale, Arizona 85260 United States

What certainly happened was that Henry Reynolds, after realizing exactly how big of a moron he was, decided to try to cover his tracks.

Funny how another of the right's national heros, Bill O'Really, can accuse the entire Daily KOS community of being "just like nazis and the KKK" to a cable TV audience, but yet you all get your collective panties in a knot over some incredibly bad web site attempting a laughingly pathetic smear on your GOP messiah Fred Thompson.

This is true RBMN, however, if Edwards were a man interested in truth, he would contact the evil person who did this, Henry Reynolds and ask for the site to be re-directed to the "imwithfred.com". Say, so, regarding thios weeks AFL-CIO Democrat ass-kissing contest...

The ultra-radical service employees union, UNITE HERE, has been maintianing a picket outside the Congress Hotel on Michigan Ave for years.

After that weird contest oof picket envy the Democrat candidates put on Teusday night, I swung down and asked. An organizer named Victoriio confirmed to me that not a single one of the candidates had joined their picket yesterday.

One can possibly except Edwards who showed up during YKos, but I think it’s most telling that MISTER LABOR, Dennis Kucinnich, isn’t nearly as authenticly committed to labor rights as his talk would suggest, while the one Democratic who did make an appearance was the least authentic of the lot, and did so as a photo-op last weekend for the benefit of the all-white, all-white-collar blogging community.

well, we still don't know exactly who the hoaxer who made the "real balls" anti-guliani attack video is, apart from the likelyhood that he's either the guy talking or the guy holding the camera.

in addition to the videos themselves being vile, he tried to distribute a phony backstory, complete with fake myyspace and youtube accounts, which attempted to pin it on mccain as a sort of "the republicans are turning on one another with an evil viciousness characteristic of only them" narrative.

he was most successful at pushing this through a bradblog guestblogger named alan parsa. the last we heard from him, he was being served with legal action by the attorneys for the mccain people he had tried to frame.

we can see this frame applied to other anonymous anti-gop attack ads. it's become pat enough that you can see it being added as an afterthought in the comments sections at youtube. under the "gays for guliani" video, for instance. basicly, when a progressive "satire" goes a little too darkside, commenters attempt to save their collective face by posting crap like, "well clearly the mccain/romney/guliani/thompson campaign is so desperate that they're willing to resort already to their true racist/homophobic/troop-hating/antii-democratic nature. "

other attack hoaxes which haven't been quite finally cleared up is the fake myspace profile attributed to dr laura's son and the actual root perpetrator of the fakke flickr site wonkett used to smear michelle mallkin with.

lthe list goes on of course.

    By the way GOP08,

The vast majority of Democrats are reasonable poeple who do not care for this type of non-sense. When people like this lawyer pull tricks like this, it turns those people away from the Democratic party and they end up voting for people like Rudy or Mitt (fine by me -- pleanty of room in the NEOCON party for everyone.)

Republicans have never won an election -- we can't -- we don't have the numbers. Instead, Democrats loose elections and Republics are elected by proxy. That's why a Republican has been President for 20 out of the last 28 years.

People like this make it hard to be a Democrat. We should be thanking him, and you should be vilanizing him.

Notice that I've not resorted to making a personal , insulting comment about you.

    Terry Gain said:

"A liberal gets caught smearing a conservative. Another liberal (GOP etc) responds by smearing another conservative (Rove)."

That's because all they can "respond" with is an insult. They certainly can't refute the fact of what actually happened, so they simply change the subject. That applies to this story, and also the TNR story by Beauchamp.

As for GOP_DOA, I have a couple of questions for you:

    1. What would your reaction be if this same stunt had been perpetrated by someone from the other side of the aisle? Like the boogie-man hiding under your bed named Karl Rove? Would you also give him a pass the way you're giving this guy a pass?

    2. Doesn't the fact that your side is using race as an issue, where it doesn't even exist, bother you in the least? If Karl Rove had been accused of the same thing, would you stand behind him, or would you call him a racist?

    3. In regards to the TNR Beauchamp story...
If you do a web search (even wiki) you will find that The New Republic has been in existence for almost 100 years. For something like 80 of those years, they never had any whiff of journalistic or ethical scandal. Yet they have now had something like 5 or 6 such episodes in the past 15 years. And most of them have been in the past 5 or 6 years. Why is that?

    4. In addition, another once-respected journalistic enterprise, CBS News, was hatched back in the 1930s. Yet they were pretty much (except for Uncle Walter in 1968) a rock-solid news organization until Dan Rather's Bush Derangement Syndrome got the better of him in 2004 when he tried to swing an election using false information.

The only other scandal I could find emanating from CBS News in the preceding 70 years was from the mid 1960s, when they were busted for having financed an invasion of Haiti, of all things, in order to make a TV special.

Final question: how could two longtime reputable journalistic enterprises fall so far and so fast? It's quite simple: Election 2000.

Let me know the next time you're making a run to Maui for medication, by the way.

This Reynolds guy sucks, his website idea was stupid, no I don't know him (I really doubt Moveon does, etc. etc.) and you can't try and pretend the left as a whole knows him and endorses him. There aren't really any good arguments for that kind of extrapolation, though I do anticipate many bad ones.

Lawyer Reynolds would seem to have engaged in activity here that calls into question his moral character for honesty and integrity, and that is relevant to his fitness to practice law.

Using FireFox - you do not get redirected anywhere from the original site CE posted when he broke this story. I have it cached and saved as html-complete on my hard drive.

The page link go directly to www.kkk.bz - the klan main website.

Apparently this ertzatz "lawyer" is too stupid to know that redirect code that works for Internet Explorer does NOT work for FireFox or Opera browsers.

    Game on....

Maybe I should say it a little differently. A lot of people call themselves Democrats but they actually vote Republican, especially in Presidential elections. The reason for this is because of the left side of the Democratic Party -- The Moveon folks and the KOS kids. These factions of the Democratic Party do not connect with the "Blue Dogs" that make up the majority of the party. These "Blue Dogs" are solid, reasonable, moderate and patriotic. They want to win in Iraq, ect. These are the folks that I'm refering to, and they are the Democrats that we need to court. The left side of the party hates everything including themselves.

10-ro-1 Henry's next move involves him huffing and puffing and threatening to blow Ed's house down. He is, after all, a lawyer. As am I, but I hope not as ethically challenged as Henry Reynolds appears.

    Posted by Mark | August 9, 2007 10:18 PM

Now that Reynolds has been dismasted, he needs to be disbarred.

I posted over at Wikipedia wondering if the episode deserves mention in Fredric Jameson's page or even its own page. You can find that here.

Fortunately my opinion of American "liberals" can't get any lower, so Henry the Goat Boy can't do any damage there. But I don't think he's that much of a departure, either.

Interesting that he specializes in Social Security Disability Law. It's one of the sleaziest areas of law to practice in these days. I found this out a couple of years ago in the course of my job, (law enforcement). What people do these days is come up with all kinds of bizarre reasons why they can't work because of some "disability". They have certain doctors who will diagnose them as "disabled". Be it bipolar disorder, or whatever works, and they get a SSI check every month. Once they get their diagnosis, they have certain attorneys who make their living getting them their checks. Adults do this for themselves, and they get their kids declared as "disabled", so they can get checks for them too. I've actually had parents who make their kids tell the teachers that they can't read, in order to get declared impaired by whatever doctor they have on the pad. It's the latest incarnation of welfare, and it's for life folks. You can thank attorneys like Henry for his contributions to making sure none of us ever see a SSI check once we are eligible.

Misleading domain names leading to pornography is a crime.

Truth in Domain Names Act of 2003

Title 18, 2252B. Misleading domain names on the Internet

    (a) Whoever knowingly uses a misleading domain name on the Internet with the intent to deceive a person into viewing material constituting obscenity shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.
    (b) Whoever knowingly uses a misleading domain name on the Internet with the intent to deceive a minor into viewing material that is harmful to minors on the Internet shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 4 years, or both.
    (c) For the purposes of this section, a domain name that includes a word or words to indicate the sexual content of the site, such as “sex” or “porn”, is not misleading.
    (d) For the purposes of this section, the term “material that is harmful to minors” means any communication, consisting of nudity, sex, or excretion, that, taken as a whole and with reference to its context—
    (1) predominantly appeals to a prurient interest of minors;
    (2) is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community as a whole with respect to what is suitable material for minors; and
    (3) lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.
    (e) For the purposes of subsection (d), the term “sex” means acts of masturbation, sexual intercourse, or physcial contact with a person’s genitals, or the condition of human male or female genitals when in a state of sexual stimulation or arousal.

When I read the story about Turbin Durbin and several other terrorist supporting democrats doing the 'crawdad' shuffle on the war in Iraq I knew the left wing would go crazy. GOP08_DOA is just one of the latest to panic and start to defend the undefendable. Add the war 'crawdads' and the war between the Islamist radical Osama Obama and Shrillary the Socialist/Communist and the democrat party is splitting at the seams. The leading democrats are starting to make the weasel from Ohio look like the only sane one. Dennis and Ron may be the democrat ticket.

    Posted by Scrapiron | August 10, 2007 2:40 AM

DOA-One other lick the left took this week was the outing of the KOS co-whatever being convicted (he didn't admit guilt but paid a $30,000 fine) of insider trading. Even KOS is simply in it for the , rip off money, not to support anyone else. The comedy that began in Jan continues.

    I agree with crusader007.

This matter should be taken up with the state bar. This type of behavior is a gross abuse of ethics and probably a punishable crime.

"However, it's fun to speculate what he could offer as a response to his bizarre smear tactics. "

Isn't it obvious ? It's Bush's fault. I see Cheney/Rove/Haliburton fingerprints all over this. An innocent man is being set-up by the orchestrators of an illegal, immoral war based on lies who are destroying the environment and starving children and kicking little puppies.

I'm surprised you couldn't figure that out.

Would it be wrong if someone created a Wikipeidia page for a certain Mr. Henry Reynolds w/ a description of what he's done w/ this site?

It would add further hilarity if somebody edited the Fredric Jameson wikipedia page to refrence Mr. Reynold's wikipedia page.

Guess he'd have to link it back to the goat sex after that...

Posted by Fred Gregory | August 10, 2007 1:34 PM

FYI : www.imwithfred2008.com now redirects you to a Wikipedis on some guy named Fredic Jameson. I guess he has gained attention and taken it down.

    Posted by G. A. Harrison | August 10, 2007 11:06 PM

What do expect from someone who is linked to MoveOn.org. I'm not the greatest GWB supporter in the GOP, but that NAACP ad from 2000 linking Bush with the James Bird incident was probably the most disgusting example of political rhetoric I've ever seen. This is just a warm-up for '08.

    Posted by DJM | August 13, 2007 12:10 PM

I emailed this note to Henry Reynold's office:

Is it not libel to fraudulently and deceptively link a perspective candidate's website to a racist organization, or to that of obscenities such as goat sex, without any evidence of such activities?

I wonder if such intimate knowledge of those obscene sites might be an accurate indicator of the libeler's own deviances?

    I humbly await your response.

I'll let you know if I receive a response. :)

    Posted by Eric | August 13, 2007 5:43 PM

So, Captain Ed, have you ever gotten any form of response? I'm surprised this didn't get som form of media attention considering the extent to which it was commented upon, and the vast number of other bloggs that linked to the site.
