How To Freak Out Your Family When You’re An Obsessive

It’s been a slow morning today, as I spent most of last night fighting insomnia and decided to sleep later than usual when I finally got my 40 winks. I dragged myself out of bed and had just began to eat when I heard my cell phone alert me to a new message. My father, the Admiral Emeritus, had left me a terse “call me back when you get this” voicemail, so I immediately called him back. This was the conversation:
AE: What’s going on?
Me: Huh?
AE: Is there a problem? Is everyone OK?
Me: I’m tired, I didn’t sleep well, but that’s it.
AE: Oh, OK. I thought something was wrong.
Me: Why?
AE: Because by this time in the morning, you usually have a half a dozen posts up on your blog.
I guess I usually do … so it’s difficult to blame him for being worried. I’m just feeling lazy today, but it’s good to know he’s keeping an eye on me.

  1. Captain, I can’t think of anyone who deserves a day off more than you. Put your feet up, go play some golf, do something for yourself, have some fun. The world will still be here tomorrow.

  2. I always wondered why we called it “the wrong side of the bed,” when all we meant to say is we didn’t sleep well. And, we’re dragging ourselves around, till the energy level perks up.
But you’re loved. You should feel complimented, galore, that your dad looks forward to what you have to say! Parents give their eye teeth to know what’s happening with their kids. Love doesn’t get bigger or stronger than that.
And, at least you know he blurted it out that he was worried. Best way. Beats running around the bush, ya know?
Hope the relaxing rays of parental sunshine draws ya out of your funk. Cause you answered his call, worried on your own. And, he just wanted to know how you were doing. It’s an O’Henry story, all over again.

  3. Cap’n Ed,
Some of your being “lazy” might just be your body’s way of trying to adjust to that new life of yours. Whenever I’ve changed a job, a lot of adrenaline kicks in as I start out on the new path and then about a week or two later, my body tends to try and even things out again – it basically shuts down the adrenaline and at the same time, my mind starts to overcome the euphoria and resets to some of the realities of the change (and may even flip back to missing some of the routine of the past 10, 20 years).
But it might be a good time to reflect on new accomplishments. I, personally, have found Heading Right to be a great place to check into 3, 4 times a day and I’ve become a fairly avid listen to Blog Talk Radio’s political offerings – listened to Kit’s show the other night and Dave, Jen and Kit last night. Great stuff.
So, I think it’s just a matter of your body and mind telling you – “We have to try and settle into this new thing, pal”

  4. One Cosmos posted this weekend about why it is essential that we build into our lives time to slack off. He even includes some slacking tunes, which I am listening to now. Congratulations!
