David Broder took Democrats to task for allowing an incompetent like Harry Reid to rise to party leadership, pointing out several of the Senator’s foolish foibles as examples. This column sent the netroots into a tizzy, with many of them declaring Broder as irrelevant and past his expiration date. The Senate Democratic caucus even sent him a letter, signed by all 50 members, extolling the virtues of Reid and lauding his “straight talk” — apparently all endorsing the notion that we have lost the war in Iraq.
Today, Editor & Publisher caught up Broder, who has no intention of retracting his remarks:
David Broder said he wouldn’t change anything in his April 26 column, which angered many readers and caused 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus to write a letter criticizing Broder in Friday’s Washington Post.
In that Thursday piece, Broder criticized Harry Reid for saying the Iraq War is lost militarily, compared Reid to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, and concluded: “The Democrats deserve better, and the country needs more, than Harry Reid has offered as Senate majority leader.”
“I still think the Democrats can do better, and should do better,” said Broder, when reached today by E&P. … Broder told E&P that he was “astonished and delighted” that 50 Democratic senators “spontaneously” came up with the letter (adding that he was being “tongue-in-cheek”).
The letter was something of a non-sequitur. His criticism wasn’t that Reid spoke his mind, but that he put his foot in his mouth when he did. Declaring a war “lost” while American troops are still fighting — and making progress — reveals a hysterical streak that doesn’t reflect well on leadership. As Broder pointed out in the column, not even the people who signed the letter would defend what Reid said, instead trying to use Clintonian word parsing to make it appear that Harry Reid had not just capitulated to terrorists in Anbar and Baghdad. Calling the President a “loser” may make the netroots swoon with delight, but it hardly makes for a professional atmosphere between Congress and the White House.
Also, the final argument that Democrats made in defending Reid is simply hilarious. They applaud the fact that he passed a budget bill, and noted only that “great strides” had been taken on everything else. Granted, the Republicans refused to do it themselves after the midterms, preferring to let the Democrats deal with it, but every Congress passes budget bills; the 109th did it, too. If that’s the threshold for excellence in Washington, then there can be no such thing as mediocrity. Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations!
Broder had to have laughed himself silly at that letter, and the Democrats had to be silly to write it. Is the Senate Democratic Caucus so sensitive that it must write group letters every time they receive criticism? No wonder these people want to run away from the terrorists in Iraq. They can’t even abide David Broder and the Washington Post opinion section.

When you think about the kinds of things that the Bush administration has to listen to year in and year out, the Democrats look like crybabies whining about something like this.

I think that Broder (and the Washingtion Post, for that matter) had better watch their backs. Remember the explicit threats Democrats made against ABC concerning “The Path to 9/11”? Undoubtedly the Democrat Party would prefer to start its crackdown on civil liberties with the GOP and “right wing talk radio”. But they won’t hesitate to go after Broder – and the Washingtion Post – if they get in the way.
In the end I suspect that Broder will come crawling back to the Democrat plantation. He is a moron, and the fact that the scales have (temporarily) fallen from his eyes does not impress me.

When even a left-wing hack like Broder can recognize Reid for the imbecile that he is, I have to wonder if Reid hasn’t done the GOP a major favor. I visualize an ’08 campaign ad consisting of two alternating quotes, one of Reid promising not to pull support from our troops in the field, one of him declaring the war lost, both superimposed over a jackass background. While the quotes are alternating every couple of seconds I hear a tape of John Kerry saying "I was for it before I was against it" over and over again.

What do I mean by “experts.” Well? The donks have controlled the wealth of this nation; where they famously sup on pork tits. And, they’re not letting any of the “wants or desires” of a good portion of the American body politic to even get heard.
Part of this, I think, is that the left “gets the majority” because the GOP is seen as a bunch of blue nose “losers” … interested in impeding freedom. Sort’a like putting up the right’s version of traffic lights. Stopping people from having choices; once in and out of the bedroom. Prohibitions have a record of killing parties. Lincoln knew this when he saw the WHIGS go down the tubes.
Yes, Lincoln stayed afloat. And, grabbed the raft that came his way; the republican party.
You’d think with Lincoln as your Banner President; things could be better. But they’re not.

And, since the Ma and Pa Kettle show is very straight-forward; what would work best to counter this? And, ya know? I think the answer would be PERSONALITY. And, an ability to communicate with large numbers of people.
Hillary, by the way, doesn’t have the talent. Even Eleanor Roosevelt was an “aquired taste.” But Eleanor’s advantage was that her husband couldn’t walk. And, as soon as he was elected governor of New York State; she became the set of legs he trusted. She did manage her end of it quite well.
Hillary doesn’t even have this talent! When Bill’s on the stage, no one looks at her.
Oh. And, Eleanor Roosevelt wore hats.
At one time a hat could help ya. Since it covered your head. You could dip the crown down. And, the picture taker didn’t necessary get those bad shots, that could ruin your day.

What politics is “about” … which is similar to the theater … but in the movies you need better looks … Is that some people are cut out for this work. While most aren’t.

Do people go into the voting booth, as if they’re trying on a dress? HELLO. Do you know how many garmments a woman takes in to try on?

But you don’t get to take these people home. So, your personal tastes aren’t a big deal … at the other end. Where politicians get up EVERY MORNING, knowing they’re gonna have to ask for money.
Handshake. And, ask for money. About the only thing it has in it, that you can compare to religion. The guy at the door, of your local parish, needs to know how to make you turn over money. So the lights go on. And, things like that. The more you want to participate; the more likely you’ll be generous.
Last time I looked, most of us haven’t given a single dime to most candidates. Again, the only thing you’re being asked for though, is your vote.
And, before women voted, the trade was to give a man a free stiff drink. AFTER he put his X on a piece of paper. And, you made sure of it. (Even though it was all a big fat secret, RIIGHT?)
I was always fascinated by inviting voters in for a drink. And, still? We’ve got a great Republic. When the presidential elections are over; most of the nation comes together. To see what the “winnah” does as he gets to wake up at the White House. (Or as Ronald Reagan called it: “Living above the store.)
And, it’s here that the most powerful party in this nation, the democraps, pretty much know they’re ahead. As Tom DeLay said. They’ve been in charge of the government throughout most of the years since FDR got elected President. That’s a big time frame.
And, the way the rules are written you only need 50%, plus ONE EXTRA. And, when you find that you’re actually at that center line, year in and year out; you can keep winning. As long as your oponent puts up duds.
You’re also blaming the Ma and Pa Kettle show, for all of your troubles. Why? They look so harmless. That it seems just like Barnum figured out. The clowns make the kids laugh. And, when the high wire act falls down, sans net. The clowns immediately drag the kids away from looking at the “splat.”

Again, he tells a very interesting story.
And, he points to internal troubles. Men who aren’t clued in on how to lead. And, Gingrich did more harms than good. Because instead of leading, he posed in front of the cameras every day. And, spouted some new plan. DeLay said it drove everyone in the House crazy. One day it was this. The next it was something wholely different. You just never knew.
You also know from your own experiences that “things happened.” And? Bill Clinton could not be dislodged from the Presidency; even though, later Livingston could not occupy the Majority Speaker’s seat; because he had a less than monogamous marriage. And, Newt, trying to appear heroic; actually pushed that poison pill down the GOP members’ throats. By then? DeLay was probably the only man NOT screwing anything that moved. He says he was bad. He says he was very bad. And, then because he had someone leaning on him. Who exposed him to Dobson. He cried through the video that straigntened him out.
Again. DeLay was spouting the stuff on the right as soon as he got into Congress. He doesn’t turn around for at least five years!
And, that’s how charges of hypocracy land.

And, now that she doesn’t menstruate anymore; she could use it on the windows. “To clean up the House.” She gave herself 100 days. Let me tell you this. That rag saw no sunlight. The lady doesn’t lift brooms.
And, to think of her as “over the hill,” misses what she does know about politics.

He is in fact an older richer guy from Las Vegas who has made a complete a** of himself and his party time and again. He will end up being as popular nationally as Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich.

Cap’n Ed, first off hope your wife is doing well. Organ donation is truly a gift of life. As far as Broder’s opinion and The senate’s support for the majority leader I think it breaks down to 2 parts for me. First, your comment expressing the Democrat’s FEAR of Mr. Broder and the mean ole terrorists in Iraq is really silly. it’s like saying Chevy Chase in Vacation convinces the family to go on a trip and the rest of the willing, supportive, family goes along and when the car breaks down on the road Chevy’s been driving on and when he can’t drive anymore he blames his wife for turning around and going home before the car can’t make it anymore.BUT, unfortunately he never said exactly where they were going and didn’t leave a map to go by. Plain and simple, the greatest mistake of this President was to not fully explain to the public what THEY KNEW would happen and didn’t tell the American people about Iraq and now they don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. Second the expression of solidarity from the Democrats actually looks genuine, compared to the strong arm tactics that Tom Delay and Karl Rove used on their faithful as an ultimatum.

Well, to me that comes pretty close to saying just what Reid said.
After all his passing of public gas we’re left with Broder joining Reid’s circle of criticism of the war.
It’s no wonder he said in E and P he wouldn’t return to the topic again.
