In a development certain to embarrass the Iranian government and possibly bring the West to the brink of war against the mullahcracy there, Fox News reports that joint US-Iraqi patrols have captured admitted Iranian intelligence officers in Baghdad -- carrying explosives:
American and Iraqi joint patrols, along with U.S. Special Operations teams, captured two men with explosives in Baghdad on Monday who identified themselves as Iranian intelligence officers, FOX News has confirmed.Senior officials said it was previously believed that Iran had officers inside Iraq stirring up violence, but this is the first time that self-proclaimed Iranian intelligence agents have been captured within the country. ...
The arrest of the two Iranians suspected of attempting to carry out a vehicle bombing has focused new attention on how Tehran is trying to protect its interests in the country it fought for eight years in a devastating war. So far, Iran is believed to have used money, not guns, to influence Iraq — particularly by spreading wealth among Shiite political factions — while avoiding a direct confrontation with its longtime rival the United States.
Infiltration and attacks sponsored by Iran and conducted by Iranian agents constitutes an act of war against Iraq and the Coalition powers. The Iranians will need to do some fast talking to extricate themselves from the response George Bush is likely to deliver, if this checks out. Combined with their instransigence on their nuclear programs and their capture of British sailors just days ago, the Iranians have exhausted the patience of everyone involved. These explosives would have been used against American personnel in Iraq -- in fact, some or most of the attacks on Americans in Baghdad may have already been generated from Iranian intelligence.
Assuming this checks out -- a big assumption -- expect to see missiles flying at known nuclear sites within days in retaliation for preparing attacks on American soldiers, unless the Iranian mullahs offer a complete withdrawal of all forces on the Iran/Iraq border and renounce any further efforts to undermine Iraqi sovereignty.
