The UN Hid North Korean Counterfeits

The United Nations faces another embarrassing scandal, as the New York Sun's Benny Avni reports today. Despite its earlier denials, UN officials not only knew about North Korea's counterfeiting operation -- it helped Pyongyang hide the evidence in Turtle Bay safes:

As federal investigators examine how the leading U.N. agency in North Korea illegally kept 35 counterfeit American $100 bills in its possession for 12 years, documents indicate that more officials were aware of the existence of the fake currency — and earlier — than the agency has reported.

Spokesmen for the United Nations Development Program have said top officials at the agency's New York headquarters learned in February that their safe in Pyongyang contained the counterfeit bills and immediately reported it to American authorities. But several documents shown recently to The New York Sun indicate that higher-ups knew much earlier that the safe held counterfeit money. ...

One "safe contents count record" — shown to the Sun with the stipulation that the paper omit such details as the exact issuing date, which was before February — confirms that fake money was in the safe in Pyongyang. According to a source familiar with the system, this and similar records were filed with UNDP headquarters twice a year.

Internal UNDP communication shown to the Sun also indicates that in at least one incident, a Pyongyang office manager reported the existence of the counterfeit money to his successor. Similar reports were filed with the seven managers that have served in North Korea since 1995. Some of these managers have returned to UNDP headquarters since then and now serve as top officials there.

In this case, the familiar refrain of "follow the money" applies literally. The UN's own documentation shows that their leadership had clear knowledge of the criminal enterprise conducted by the Kim Jong-Il regime. They were required to inform the US of it and to provide the evidence for our investigations. Instead, they aided and abetted Kim and Pyongyang in undermining our currency.

Not surprisingly, the Treasury Department takes a dim view of this activity. The Secret Service wants to talk to at least 13 officials in the UN Development Program to determine their complicity in the counterfeiting ring. So far, the UN has not lifted immunity for those individuals, and they're not talking about when it will happen; a "senior UN official" told Avni that the UN and the Secret Service are "working out the modalities".

If federal prosecutors can return an indictment and confirm this activity, the UN will face a much tougher time in the US than it did in the Oil-for-Food Programme scandal. In that case, they turned a blind eye and enabled Saddam Hussein to enrich himself through a vast kickback scheme. If the UN helped hide North Korea's counterfeiting ring, that is a direct insult to our sovereignty, as well as our hospitality.

It would be an insult that we cannot afford to let pass. If the UN does not immediately fire everyone involved in this scandal and revoke their immunity, then we must cut off all funds for the UN and create a timetable for withdrawal from this thoroughly corrupt organization. We have no need of a debating society whose members transform refugee camps into seraglios, who stuff the pockets of dictators with money meant for those they oppress, and who actively assist other nations in undermining our currency. If the UN fails to cooperate, it's time to push Turtle Bay into the water and bid adieu to the last of the Cold War anachronisms.

What connects the Official IRA, Russian FSB, Syria and the UN?

The web of the supernote.

"Cold War anachronism" - I like it.

Another "Cold War Anachronism" that is obviously over is NATO. Our only effective military Allies are now Great Britain (for a short time), Australia, and Israel.

But I don't see this Congress or Administration changing the status quo. As long as NATO and the UN are willing to take our money, we will keep sending it.

This WOULD be embarrassing in the UN WAS ever embarrassed. They just go on their merry way, not really concerned about anything.

As much as I would love to see that, it's not going to happen. If Americans are willing to uncomplainingly subsidize rape - Peacekeeper forces have a demonstrable pattern of abusing the societies they are sent to protect, and the UN does nothing except protect the Peacekeepers - then they certainly are not going to care about counterfeiting. It's a sad statement about our society.

"If the UN fails to cooperate, it's time to push Turtle Bay into the water and bid adieu to the last of the Cold War anachronisms."

It has never time to belong to the UN. It has always been corrupt and a place to piss away money. If we must have charity to other nations, it should be done bilaterally and only to worthy recipients preferably in our hemishere.

The UN has gone from mere benign incompetence through passive hostility and is now criminally opposed to the US.

Republican presidential candidates need to make the UN's active anti-Americanism a campaign issue. That will be the only way the MSM pays any attention to it.

I would be willing to see them bulldoze the current facilities at Guantanamo Bay and set it aside for a new UN facility. Particularly if the liberals are still set on having the UN on US soil.

I'm at a loss as to the culpability of the UN in this matter. Here we have the equivalent of a statist Kitty Genovese incident -- in which a bystander chooses to remain a bystander while a crime is committed. It isn't a crime, but stinks to high heaven, and says much about the UN itself.

Keeping but not using counterfeit US currency in North Korea (whose government printed the bills) is not a crime. If we have 35 bills kept over 12 years, we should just be thankful that they were never exported and used.

I would be quite interested in knowing how the UN determined these bills to be fake; from what I've heard, they are of such high quality (printed on the same German presses as our own bills) that to a layman they are indistiguishable from the real thing.

Maybe we should be happy that the UN was just a bystander and not actively involved with the crimes (like their peacekeepers in Africa and the sex-for-food scandal).

Liberals have known of the huge foreign counterfeiting organizations dealing in American currency for decades.

They won't turn a hair - this helps THEIR Agenda of undermining America, and "leveling" the playing field.

I'll anxiously await notification in the MSM of th is new development.

I'll so be holding my breath. Har dee har har!

S O NOT!

HAH! The UN has NEVER been MERELY BENIGN a single day in its entire existence.

But the US has certainly been masochistic since the 1930's.

Barry Goldwater was right.

The UN consists of a bunch of worthless, rich heirs, who attend million dollar cocktail parties where they talk about how much they care about the poor.

Then the go back to their desks and steal money with both hands.

Sort of like our own Democrat Party.

It seems, the only organizations that never tolerate embezzlement are organized crime families. They don't tolerate it, because they see how addictive and destructive it is to the people they extort from, and who rob and embezzle to pay them. The type of graft that's been going on at the UN is the "gateway drug" to much worse. Next, comes selling Security Council votes to the highest bidder, if that hasn't already happened.

Bold powerful words CE; good for you.

A case study into the history of the UN would be very interesting; detailing the "good" & the "bad", as well as the purpose & designed intent... I have really negative memories of this organization during my adult life. My father (despite being a Democrat) has always referred to the UN as a corrupt bunch of American haters.

I'd also like to see a case study on the "love fest" Liberals have with the UN. This organization receives huge amounts of American tax payer dollars.

In the grand scheme, or on it's own, this isn't a huge deal. But it IS embarassing for the UN (or for any other "watchdog" that gets caught with its head firmly up its own rear end) and adds to the pattern of incompetence.

However, Zete Boy has a point. The UN could care less. They've ignored far worse. By the end of this news cycle it will be off of their desks.

It just makes me wonder what's going on in Turtle Bay that WOULD make them run for cover if it ever came out...

The rule of thumb for artificial constructs such as the UN is deliquescence after 72 years... for example the Soviet Union, aka Communist Russia, slimed its way from 1917 to 1989 (1991, for purists who include that August's "Putsch of Fools").

Founded under Comintern auspices courtesy of Harry Hopkins and Alger Hiss --undoubtedly among numerous others-- the UN (sic) is a Stalinist artifact purposefully designed to make nonsense of its ostensible Charter. Aside from Truman's "police action" in Korea (1950), publishing hoicked-up statisics, over time this feckless and ruthlessly stupid organization has enabled ten times more active global harm than could possibly have happened in its absence.

As scandals multiply, while insular and ossified elites profess surprise, dysfunctional UN cultures metastasize in every area it touches: Complicit in genocide (Darfur, Rwanda et.al.); actively encouraging brutal thuggeries from Communists to vile Islamofascists in contravention of every stated principle; its personnel corrupt and craven to the nth degree-- from the early 1980s, it has been painfully obvious that the UN is not a cure for anything, but a parasitic disease itself.

If not before, the end of the old League's successor should come in 2018 or thereabouts. By then we will have seen not only counterfeiting and pedophilic scandals, "Oil for Peace" redux on doltish Global Warming scales, but no doubt active efforts to destroy Taiwan in favor of Peking's Red Rats (we quote Ceausescue's, ah, admirers) plus sanctifying despots in South Africa, Venezuela, Zimbabwe-- you name it. Freedom for Tibet? Accountability in Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam? Don't make us laugh.

By Labor Day 2009, we hope President Thompson will call out Turtle Bay for what it is, and has been for generations. Bag it, topple its foolish slab into the East River, and return its real estate deed-of-gift to Rockefeller interests with thanks but no regrets. Otherwise, expect the first armed anti-US coalition under China and Putin's KGB enablers no later than 2020.

Rose says, "The UN has NEVER been MERELY BENIGN a single day in its entire existence." I say it wasn't benign before it existed; Alger Hiss represented the US in the formation negotiations.

Acheron, thank you for your rather complete post which I hadn't seen when I submitted my prior one. I heartily endorse what you have written.

I give up. I honestly can't think of why we still are involved with this organization. I used to think that if we had all these swine in one place we could watch them, but seriously, what's the point?

Get out, get out, get out.

Posted by docjim505 [TypeKey Profile Page] | April 3, 2007 6:46 PM

Very simple:

Get US out of the UN NOW!

Posted by conservative democrat [TypeKey Profile Page] | April 3, 2007 8:13 PM

Dump the UN, if a country wants to keep diplomatic relations with us they can open up a small embassy in this country, if not so be it.So, nodonkey, republicans don't go to rich cocktail parties? Whatever your smoking must be some primo stuff.

The UN goons didn't just keep that money in UN
safes for free, how much complicity were they paid
for by the North Koreans.

Posted by KauaiBoy [TypeKey Profile Page] | April 3, 2007 11:25 PM

The UN should be relocated out of the US as a matter of basic Homeland security policy. God only knows what exposure we face thtough the abuse of diplomatic immunity (let alone bad driving).

Although I like DaveD's suggested site (absent the unnecessary bulldozing) I have always thought Jerusalem would be a better location since God could keep a close eye on things from there. Also having the headquarters in a less desirable location than NYC might actually attract individuals more motivated to serve the true mission of the UN rather than a chance to live cheap in the USA. (Naaaaah fat chance in that),

Posted by Adjoran [TypeKey Profile Page] | April 4, 2007 3:31 AM

Whatever possible purpose the UN could serve began to disappear with the Nixon-Kissinger detante initiative. Once the Soviets and Americans were dealing directly with each other, the UN was no longer necessary.

It has always been the repository of fourth-rate crooks from third-world dictatorships. With the dissolution of the Soviet Empire, corruption became their ONLY business.
