Would Early Primaries Allow More Donations?
Jim Geraghty at The Campaign Spot believes that candidates will benefit if primaries and caucuses get pushed into 2007. A loophole in campaign finance regulation appears to allow an extra $2,300 per donor for candidates if those elections are held this year. Be sure to check out Jim's analysis, and the surprising candidate that may benefit the most.
When Tom Met Jeralyn
One of the interesting aspects of politics is finding out that opponents are people, too. Jeralyn Merritt of TalkLeft met Rep. Tom Tancredo backstage at NBC's studios, and found him more likable than she had anticipated. Perhaps it was their mutual interest in Dog, The Bounty Hunter ...
Joe Lieberman A Right-Wing Nut?
That's what CAIR says, according to Joe Kaufman. He has a link to a CAIR official's blog post that calls Lieberman, along with John Bolton, former CIA director James Woolsey, and the Heritage Foundation's Peter Brookes as "extremists". Affad Shaikh also calls Dick Cheney a "fat bastard of a liar," apparently not meant as a pop-culture reference to the Austin Powers movies. (via Let Freedom Ring)
Broadband Homelessness
The Japanese have made homelessness more efficient, and more Net-friendly, too. Their Internet cafés have become homeless shelters for the struggling manual-labor sector. The problem has grown into such a problem that government intervention will shortly become a political priority.
Found My Law Firm
Power Line links twice to this story regarding an attorney at Faegre & Benson who refused to become a victim and helped capture a very dangerous man. Keith Radtke is a partner in the firm as is Power Line's John Hinderaker. Radtke is listed in satisfactory condition after getting shot in the back, but that didn't keep him from locking up his attacker in a wrestling grip until police could arrive. I don't know about you, but that's the kind of man I'd want as my counsel ....
Don't Click That YouTube E-mail
The latest in spam seems to be redirections from YouTube links in e-mail to IP addresses without domain names. They attempt to entice people by making it seem that they have been inadvertently YouTubed. I'm sure most people can see through this scam, but just in case, you've been warned ....
Rick Moran Escapes The Floods
Rick Moran has kept us up to date on his travails along the Algonquin River. Yesterday, the police showed up to get him evacuated before the river flooded his home -- but today, Rick finds that a minor miracle has taken place, and that his house survives ... at least for now. Keep Rick in your prayers, and keep checking in at Right Wing Nut House for updates.
Rule 1: Drag The Corpse On Over First
If I've learned anything in four years of blogging, don't try to be out in front of the death rumors, especially with the villains of the world. Saddam died a hundred deaths before we caught him alive in his spider hole, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi almost as many before his demise last year. Osama may or may not be alive, but everyone's avoided speculating on his fate for a while now. Maybe Val at Babalu Blog will get luckier with his "Castro Is Dead" story. We all hope so. I'll wait for the announcement ....
Hobbs Choice
Volunteer Voters is holding its annual "Best of Nashville" on-line polls, and one of the categories is for the best political writer. Our friend Bill Hobbs, now posting at Newsbusters, and he'd like his on-line fans to cast their votes. Drop by and put one in for Bill if you get a chance!
Murtha Getting Backlogged On Apologies
Gary Gross of Let Freedom Ring sees another case collapsing on the Haditha charges. He's called for Murtha to apologize earlier, and adds another reason to the tally.
No Such Thing As 'Moderate' Islam?
Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan told a television interviewer that he finds the label "moderate Islam" offensive. Shrink Wrapped has a lot more on this, but at least in the same interview Erdogan acknowledged that "radical Islam" exists, and that it's been a catastrophe. Be sure to read the whole post.
MS-NBC Gets Punk'd
Power Line has a great post on a lack of journalistic effort on the part of MS-NBC. In covering the Michael Vick story, they reported on what they thought was Al Sharpton's website proclaiming Vick's innocence. I guess Alex Johnson and two other MS-NBC reporters couldn't bother to read the title bar of the site, which proudly proclaims it as a "parody site".
New Instapundit Podcast On Pharmaceuticals
I just caught this e-mail from Glenn Reynolds about his new podcast with Richard Epstein, the author of Overdose: How Excessive Government Regulation Stifles Pharmaceutical Innovation. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but the topic is important enough to make sure I carve out time for it tomorrow. Get their first and tell me what I'm missing ....
Fed Trying A 'Stealth Easing'?
The Federal Reserve seems to have conducted a quiet campaign to steady markets that started spinning out of control, according to King Banaian at SCSU Scholars. He thinks that the Fed has conducted a "stealth easing". Be sure to read his explanation and follow his lnks.
A Shameless Bit Of Sel-Promotion
Gateway Pundit and Val at Babalu Blog note a crass PR move by Hugo Chavez. Venezuela has responded to Peru's eathquake disaster with food shipments -- and with Hugo's smiling picture on the cans. He also uses the tuna-can label to undermine President Garcia of Peru, who narrowly defeated Chavez' pal Ollanto Humalla, whom the labels extol for his "solidarity" with Chavez.
Tacky beyond belief.

I am also a great fan of the Anchoress and have missed her while she has been only sporadically blogging. Please pass on the prayers and best wishes of her fans if you are able to communicate with her later. May God bless and keep her safe & well. There are too few like her in this world.

How sad! I too hope and pray that she is safe and well.

No big secret what's ailing the Anchoress, Captain. She says kidney stones on her blog.
Posted by Sami - Mitt08 | August 17, 2007 11:28 AM
If a stone stays inside one of your kidneys, it usually doesn't cause a problem unless it becomes so large it blocks the flow of urine. This can cause pressure and pain, along with the risk of kidney damage, bleeding and infection. Smaller stones may partially block the thin tubes that connect each kidney to your bladder or the outlet from the bladder itself. These stones may cause ongoing urinary tract infection or kidney damage if left untreated.
Any internal infection can be bad. Quick recovery Anchoress

I am a long-standing fan of The Anchoress and one who has benefited from her support of my blogging, her answers to my questions of faith, and from the numerous e-mail exhanges we have shared. She's as fine a human being, and as dear a Cyber-friend, as she is a gifted writer. She's in my thoughts and prayers and I thank the Captain for the heads-up.

The Anchoress has been one of my favorite bloggers for a very long time, and she is certainly at the top of my prayer list.
Get well soon, dear Anchoress.

Captain,
I got the same type of email you got from her and will not go into the details but she is asking for prayers.
Posted by Amanda | August 17, 2007 12:44 PM
Thanks for the opportunity Captain...you and the Anchoress are the two I read daily (several times) without fail. She is one of a kind and will continue to be in my prayers.

I usually read this blog before I hit the Anchoress. You spooked me with your vailed hint. I have had kidney stones (note the plural). It isn't pretty, but it is no longer dire. She has my prayers, but I am not happy with you. Compared with your mate's problems and life threatening cancer, stones are a (very painful) toot. Be more forthcoming in the future please.

Sending prayers and good wishes for the Anchoress. I admire her excellent articles and common sense approach. We need more of these people in our lives. Get well soon.

David, it's more than just the stones. I don't want to go into details, but it's an emergency complication about which she e-mailed me and a couple of other bloggers privately. I assure you, it's serious in the short term.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this crisis. I hope she has a complete and timely recovery.

The Anchoress is one of the sites I visit everday. She is the most gracious blogger. I will pray that she recovers quickly.

Let's also send healing beams out to White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, who announced today he's leaving. As most of you already know, Tony has colon cancer. Having dealt with this in my own family, I can tell you it's NO picnic.
Some "tolerant" people on the other side of the aisle don't care, though. Witness these select comments from today's Huffington Post (url at bottom)
"personally i would like to see him recover ... and then be prosecuted for his criminal spinning. with snow, justice delayed would be justice served!"
"cancer is bad, so is war."
"I don't care about Snow or his cancer. He is a cancer on the US along with bush and the rest of his crew. So what if snow dies, I hope it is slow and painful. Thousands of americans and iraqi civilians have died in this war that bush created and they had to die far away from home and all alone. Snow is bush cheerleader. I hope he rot in hell and take the rest of them with him."
"He's a lying sack of crap. And he has cancer. Life sucks. Snow makes it suck more for most of my countrymen than it should. Snow is enabling this President to do his Crimes. He is selling it to YOU. He's a conspirator. With cancer. Different topics. Except the karma thing."
"While it is not ideal that he suffers from this illness, it has occured to some that there may well be a causal link between ones' "way of being" and the disease one contracts. Being very cynical. insincere, and (borderline?) sociopathic can engender some unfortunate consequences, fortunately :)"
"waaaaah!, ... cry cry cry, we're the meanest people in the world, here, ... snowjob is actually a real word that accurately depicts what mr snow has been doing for YEARS on faux news & for chimpy, ... im sorry the man has cancer, lots of people do, my grandmother for instance, but she doesnt lie to the public on a daily basis & enable all the hate & crime & DEATHS by chimpy, deadeye, & this disgusting admin, ..."
"Snow dying of cancer makes him...how did he refer to the American soldiers coming back from Iraq in coffins...just a number. His family...ummm...compared to the [now] nine families who lost a husband/father/son in the Utah mining disaster (allowed by a mining industry executive appointed to run MSHA)...is just a number to me. And they'll be just one of thousands of families that lost a member to cancer. If Snow can't stand up in a news conference and demand more medical research, better health care for *ALL* Americans from this administration...well, screw him. Hope his family goes hungry."
"I'll be concerned for Snow just as soon as he is concerned for Katrina victims, those lacking health insurance, those fighting for chickenhawks everywhere.
Good riddance Snow "
"Boo hoo! He's got cancer. How many people in the world that don't have cancer are dying because of him and his cronies? You are one idiot to feel sorry for him because of his cancer! Do you have any empathy for the young men/women in IRAQ who are there because of his lies and are dying as we read this? Tell me, please. Go over to the Rush board. They're all probably praying!!!"
"Snow may have no say in what goes on in the assylum but he's Bush's mouthpiece and supports this war in Iraq, in effect becoming one of the cogs in the wheel of death that run this war. The lies he mouthed day after day only helped to reinforce and charge up the manaical republican base, and not much different than the tactics used by the Third Reich with the Big Lie e.g., say something often enough and people will believe it. Tony Snow has as much American blood on his hands as Bush, Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld."
"So what????? What about all the american that have died and that is dying right now. Save your pity and prayers for them. You don't get a pass just because your time ran out. Given the chance he will keep helping bush to spew his lies. I have always believe if you were a SOB while you are alive in the end you are just a dead SOB."
"He's probably leaving because he gotten a new prognosis and he won't live long. I'm sure he'll take satisfaction in knowing that he lived longer than all the teens and twenty-somethings he helped send to their death in Iraq."
"Man this guy is like a cockroach. I think the man upstairs is trying to tell ya something Tony. Karma, social justice, killing the messenger, God's Wrath....someone is trying to give him a sign... "
"If Hitler had gotten cancer of the mouth, that would have been nice, just as as if Stalin and Mao and even Rumsfeld had gotten a terminal illness, that would have been even nicer. Just think, if all the thugs who had been repsonsible for getting us into Iraq never existed, 4,000 Americans and counting would still be alive. "
And that is only page 1 of 6 pages of comments

My prayers go out to all these faithful, in "these days", and pray that each finds victory over their afflictions. I know that the Anchoress has had a long battle - but I know The One Who specializes in coming through when all hope is "reasonably" lost.
He specializes in taking our messes and making a Message, taking our tests and giving us a wonderful Testimony.
If I didn't believe in Miracles at His kind and loving hand, I couldn't make it, myself. "But He is able..." and I commit all these cares into His Hand, and thank Him in advance for all the glory to His Name which is His inheritance in our trials. And I know that we shall come rejoicing for the good things He has already planned in advance for us to walk in. Bless His Holy Name.
