There Goes The Undefeated Season
Notre Dame managed to get its first loss out of the way as soon as possible -- and as badly as possible. Georgia Tech came to South Bend and stomped the Irish, 33-3, in the worst home opener loss in school history. The offense fumbled twice and allowed seven sacks on Evan Sharpley, who must have longed to have Brady Quinn back on the field instead. If Charlie Weis doesn't turn this debacle around fast, he may want to start asking Ty Willingham for some career counseling ....
Would Early Primaries Allow More Donations?
Jim Geraghty at The Campaign Spot believes that candidates will benefit if primaries and caucuses get pushed into 2007. A loophole in campaign finance regulation appears to allow an extra $2,300 per donor for candidates if those elections are held this year. Be sure to check out Jim's analysis, and the surprising candidate that may benefit the most.
When Tom Met Jeralyn
One of the interesting aspects of politics is finding out that opponents are people, too. Jeralyn Merritt of TalkLeft met Rep. Tom Tancredo backstage at NBC's studios, and found him more likable than she had anticipated. Perhaps it was their mutual interest in Dog, The Bounty Hunter ...
Joe Lieberman A Right-Wing Nut?
That's what CAIR says, according to Joe Kaufman. He has a link to a CAIR official's blog post that calls Lieberman, along with John Bolton, former CIA director James Woolsey, and the Heritage Foundation's Peter Brookes as "extremists". Affad Shaikh also calls Dick Cheney a "fat bastard of a liar," apparently not meant as a pop-culture reference to the Austin Powers movies. (via Let Freedom Ring)
Broadband Homelessness
The Japanese have made homelessness more efficient, and more Net-friendly, too. Their Internet cafés have become homeless shelters for the struggling manual-labor sector. The problem has grown into such a problem that government intervention will shortly become a political priority.
Found My Law Firm
Power Line links twice to this story regarding an attorney at Faegre & Benson who refused to become a victim and helped capture a very dangerous man. Keith Radtke is a partner in the firm as is Power Line's John Hinderaker. Radtke is listed in satisfactory condition after getting shot in the back, but that didn't keep him from locking up his attacker in a wrestling grip until police could arrive. I don't know about you, but that's the kind of man I'd want as my counsel ....
Don't Click That YouTube E-mail
The latest in spam seems to be redirections from YouTube links in e-mail to IP addresses without domain names. They attempt to entice people by making it seem that they have been inadvertently YouTubed. I'm sure most people can see through this scam, but just in case, you've been warned ....
Rick Moran Escapes The Floods
Rick Moran has kept us up to date on his travails along the Algonquin River. Yesterday, the police showed up to get him evacuated before the river flooded his home -- but today, Rick finds that a minor miracle has taken place, and that his house survives ... at least for now. Keep Rick in your prayers, and keep checking in at Right Wing Nut House for updates.
Rule 1: Drag The Corpse On Over First
If I've learned anything in four years of blogging, don't try to be out in front of the death rumors, especially with the villains of the world. Saddam died a hundred deaths before we caught him alive in his spider hole, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi almost as many before his demise last year. Osama may or may not be alive, but everyone's avoided speculating on his fate for a while now. Maybe Val at Babalu Blog will get luckier with his "Castro Is Dead" story. We all hope so. I'll wait for the announcement ....
Hobbs Choice
Volunteer Voters is holding its annual "Best of Nashville" on-line polls, and one of the categories is for the best political writer. Our friend Bill Hobbs, now posting at Newsbusters, and he'd like his on-line fans to cast their votes. Drop by and put one in for Bill if you get a chance!
Murtha Getting Backlogged On Apologies
Gary Gross of Let Freedom Ring sees another case collapsing on the Haditha charges. He's called for Murtha to apologize earlier, and adds another reason to the tally.
No Such Thing As 'Moderate' Islam?
Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan told a television interviewer that he finds the label "moderate Islam" offensive. Shrink Wrapped has a lot more on this, but at least in the same interview Erdogan acknowledged that "radical Islam" exists, and that it's been a catastrophe. Be sure to read the whole post.
MS-NBC Gets Punk'd
Power Line has a great post on a lack of journalistic effort on the part of MS-NBC. In covering the Michael Vick story, they reported on what they thought was Al Sharpton's website proclaiming Vick's innocence. I guess Alex Johnson and two other MS-NBC reporters couldn't bother to read the title bar of the site, which proudly proclaims it as a "parody site".
New Instapundit Podcast On Pharmaceuticals
I just caught this e-mail from Glenn Reynolds about his new podcast with Richard Epstein, the author of Overdose: How Excessive Government Regulation Stifles Pharmaceutical Innovation. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but the topic is important enough to make sure I carve out time for it tomorrow. Get their first and tell me what I'm missing ....
Fed Trying A 'Stealth Easing'?
The Federal Reserve seems to have conducted a quiet campaign to steady markets that started spinning out of control, according to King Banaian at SCSU Scholars. He thinks that the Fed has conducted a "stealth easing". Be sure to read his explanation and follow his lnks.

Perhaps, the real test comes when traffic returns after Labor Day?
Sometimes, I've noticed the "waiting" that comes after hitting the "post" button, is that there were other posts in the "Q."
Yes, it's wonderful to see the comments going on up there, real fast, though. You done did good work.

Testing comments!

Thanks Ed! Finally....the commenting section of your site has been a frustration.
Posted by KJBtruth | September 1, 2007 11:31 PM
Captain Ed,
You stated at the end of this post:
"hopefully we will no longer have any issues with comments."
I doubt it! I predict many issues with comments.
Here is one:
Why is called "joshing" someone? Was there once, long ago a great Josh, who was such a "card" (for another day) to have that type of behavior named for him?
Ok, and why is a "john" a toilet, a "trick", or a johnny-come-lately?
I have many questions, but maybe another time. Instead here is an overheard Washington conversation:
Sandy Berger came home late one night, and his wife greets him at the door and says "are those incriminating, very embarrassing to the Clinton's top-secret documents in your pant or are you just happy to see me?"
Seriously though, moving on to Larry Craig... on the other hand...
Whoduh thunk it? The LA Times? hmm.
OK, there are some issues in comments.
oh wait. issues WITH comments. my bad.
As you were.
just a couple of seconds. big improvement.

Man... after all the compliments that I've given you, I feel bad about pointing out a really minor problem...
But..
If you look on the 'Main Page' of the site, at the bottom of the two most recent posts it says:
Comments (0)
When in fact there are indeed comments to be read. :sigh: Tweak on, Cap'n... tweak on...
Posted by KJBtruth | September 2, 2007 12:03 AM
Yes... indeed it is raining in Mr. Michaels viewpoint, but I remain positive!
That is a clever device meant to drive comments way up!
Very smart. Way to go Captain Ed!

Congrats, Captain Ed.
One oustanding minor comment issue I'm noticing is the number of comments on the mail page doesn't match the actual number of comments... this page now has 6-comments, but the front page says 0.
Is this related to the fix, in other words, not rebuilding the pages?
If so, is there any way of using rss xml feed with regular expressions or an off the shelf solution or plugin to show the correct number of comments to the indicator on the front page?
Posted by Christoph | September 2, 2007 12:39 AM
*main page, not "mail" page. In other words, on the individual item pages, it's correct, but on the home page, it's wrong and you can't tell new comments have been added because the indicator doesn't move.
I'm thinking it probably only moves when the page is rebuilt... in which case, the indicator on the main page is not useful at present.

HUMMING?
The counter for comments, remains set at ZERO.
A fly fell into the soup.
Posted by Rose | September 2, 2007 2:11 AM
Looks fabulous, Captain. I know you have put MONTHS of aggravating labor into trying to get this humming right.
Congratulations! Hope this gives you a good breather, and makes your job much easier!

I'm sorta new to this blog and I have a question for Rose and Carol. I enjoy your comments but I can't help but wonder how you can blog 24 hours a day and still get other things done.
You shoud join forces and write a self help book. How to Blog and Still Have a Life.
Posted by Captain Ed | September 2, 2007 8:35 AM
Yes, the count didn't update because I kept the script from rebuilding the index templates. I've changed that setting; let's see what the delay is for that change.
Posted by Captain Ed | September 2, 2007 8:37 AM
It seems to push processing time to around 15-16 seconds. Is that livable for everyone?
Posted by Mr. Michael | September 2, 2007 8:47 AM
It wouldn't bother me at all, Cap'n... I mean, how many times per minute does anybody need to post, anyway...
Posted by Mr. Michael | September 2, 2007 8:50 AM
... and I counted to ten, not 15. (...and when I tried to post this right away, I got a warning page, saying I'd posted too often! Irony lives!
Posted by Christoph | September 2, 2007 9:01 AM
Acceptable. And that should be about the same for anyone on either a high or low speed connection, right, because your server's doing the work?
Posted by Captain Ed | September 2, 2007 9:13 AM
Christoph,
I think that's right. The connection speed would impact the reload after the comment processes, but that's it.
Posted by Christoph | September 2, 2007 9:13 AM
That wasn't too bad. I've certainly posted on slower sites.
It took a few minutes for the count to update, but it DID update.

I always wish I knew what people are talking about when they talk the language of computers but as long as my comment appears when I push that little thingie (thingamabob or thingamajig?) I'm happy (and just once is even better)
Posted by mrlynn | September 3, 2007 7:20 AM
MUCH better, thanks! I had trained myself to go do other browsing while waiting for the CQ comment to 'take'; I even learned to not re-post just because I got an error; the comment did take after all!
Today's was amazing, nearly instantaneous--back to the 21st century!
Now about the olive-drab, Army color. . . Is this the pea-soup Navy?
Oh, and can we have a Print button?
I know, we're spoiled rotten, and never satisfied. ;-)
