I've decided to get a head start on the new job, which officially starts tomorrow, at Blog Talk Radio. I've posted for the first time at the BTR blog, talking about the opportunities ahead for both myself and BTR: As much as blogging represented that opportunity for writers four years ago, I believe Blog Talk Radio holds out even more opportunities for writers and talkers now. We have just begun operations eight months ago, and already we have a wide variety of shows for listeners to enjoy — and not just in politics. We expand our reach every day into new topics and new issues, and we see no limit. Blog Talk Radio gives everyone a microphone, and more importantly, a solid technical platform that alllows for immediate dialog. Instead of posting an essay and waiting for comments and e-mails, New Media people can interact directly with those who agree...

Duncan Hunter will be my guest on the first installment of the daily CQ Radio show today. The Congressman and presidential hopeful will appear between 2 - 2:30 pm Central Time to discuss his candidacy, national security, and his vision for America. Hunter's candidacy has flown under the media radar thus far, and we'll ask him how he plans to make a move on the frontrunners during 2007. In the second half, Fausta joins us to talk about her own Blog Talk Radio show. She's talking immigration and more on her show, live at 11 am CT. The best part of Blog Talk Radio is that you can join the conversation -- live! Call me at 646-652-4889 to talk with Congressman Hunter, Fausta, or me during the show. UPDATE AND BUMP: I forgot to link to Hunter's website; I fixed that now. And here's the Congressman posing with the...

BUMP: Just a reminder that we will be also discussing the Virginia Tech story. Be sure to call and join the conversation. On today's edition of CQ Radio, I'll have an interview with Bernard Goldberg -- journalist and author of such excellent books as Bias and The 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America -- as he launches his new book, Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right: How One SIde Lost Its Mind and the Other Lost Its Nerve. The book launches today, and on Saturday I had the opportunity to have a long conversation with Goldberg, one of the most entertaining interview subjects. We discuss: * Don Imus -- "A very unlikable and unpleasant person ... but Don Imus is not what's plaguing black America." * Republicans -- "Betrayed their principles" * Al Sharpton - "If there are two people in the whole world...
Pam at Atlas Shrugged interviewed Hugh Hewitt tonight on her Blog Talk Radio show this evening. Hugh is one of my friends in the blogosphere, and he lends his special perpective to current events. What's keeping you from starting your Blog Talk Radio show?...

CQ Radio hits the Internet stream today at 2 pm CT with a very special guest: Howard Kurtz, the Washington Post journalist and media critic. Howard writes a must-read media review most weekdays that not only gives links to some of the most trenchant commentary of the previous day, but also his own analysis of the big stories. He also hosts CNN's Reliable Sources evey Sunday at 10 am ET. His upcoming installment will be devoted to media coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre, but we'll get a head start on that topic today. We'll also take your calls at 646-652-4889 to discuss the shooting and the media coverage of it. Be sure to join the conversation!...

Our next installment of CQ Radio will feature NZ Bear of the Victory Caucus, discussing the significant changes in store for the organization. The Victory Caucus plans to organize as a fundraising force to get tough on national security and the war on terror. NZ will talk about the plans and what it means for the 2008 election. We'll also take your calls at 646-652-4889 to discuss NBC's decision to air the Cho package, the Gonzales testimony, and much more. Be sure to join the conversation! UPDATE: CQ Radio is now the #8 show for Blog Talk Radio! And the #2 show is in Portugese, hosted by a Brazilian center-right philosopher who lives in the US now, Olavo de Carvalho. UPDATE II: I've uploaded a Blog Talk Radio player that streams the latest CQ Radio show directly on the blog. If you want to turn off the player, click...

Our next installment of CQ Radio will feature premiere blogger and journalist Jules Crittenden, whose "good news, bad news" posts are daily delights. Jules embedded with the troops during the initial invasion of Iraq, and has written a great deal about the war on terror, Iraq, and the future of our national security efforts. We'll talk about all of these topics and more today, starting at 2 pm CT. We'll also take your calls at 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! UPDATE: Don't forget that you can click on the sidebar player to listen to the podcasts, but you need to click on the link here to listen to the live show. UPDATE II: Jules and I had a great time talking about media bias and the war in Iraq. Don't miss it! You can also play it on the sidebar player any time....

Daniel Glover at Air Congress picked up my interview with Howard Kurtz on CQ Radio earlier this week. Daniel also handles the duties at the National Journal blog, Beltway Blogroll, as well as his editorial responsibilities for the magazine. In the same post, he notes that another BTR show, RK/NLS Virginia Politics, scored a big get with their interview of Hillary Clinton's Deputy Campaign Manager, Mike Henry. Blog Talk Radio keeps picking up steam! CORRECTION: It was not Hillary, but Mike Henry -- but still a great interview....

UPDATE: Well, we had some transmission problems at the beginning, but Patterico gave some great background and perspective to the case. I hope you enjoy it! Today's installment of CQ Radio will feature Patterico of Patterico's Pontifications, the excellent blog of a Los Angeles-area prosecutor who covers law, politics, and especially media criticism. He has done an excellent job of cataloguing the various gaffes and outrages of the Los Angeles Times, so much so that his annual reviews of the paper become a must-read. Patterico will join me to discuss the testimony of Alberto Gonzales and what it means for the Bush administration. I know that CQ readers have strong opinions on the subject, so be sure to join the conversation by dialing 646-652-4889. Note: Blog posting may be slow, as the FM and I are at the hospital this morning for some investigation into recent lab results. The...

Our inaugural edition of the daily CQ Radio show featured an excellent chat with Congressman Duncan Hunter. Hunter has started campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination, and his efforts are based on his national-security and trade policies. Hunter served for years on the Armed Services Committee and chaired it for four years, and he brings an informed perspective to those issues. This is Part 1 of the Hunter interview; part 2 will be posted tomorrow. EM: Our first guest and it’s a tremendous honor, let me introduce Congressman Duncan Hunter, the Congressman has served 27 years in the House, chairing the House Armed Services Committee for four of them. He fought in Vietnam with Airborne and Ranger units, and he lives near the Mexican border and wants to be our next President, and those two facts are not unrelated. Welcome to CQ Radio, sir. DH: Thanks. Great to be with...
Today's installment of CQ Radio will feature Katie Levinson of the Rudy Giuliani campaign in the second half of the show. Levinson works as a spokesperson for the campaign and will answer our questions about Rudy's platform, his strategies, and his outreach to conservatives. We'll also be talking about the supplemental spending bill for the Iraq war, and a new addition to Blog Talk Radio that I think will generate a great deal of enthusiasm. Join the conversation today at 646-652-4889 when we go to air at 2 pm CT! UPDATE: I'll also be talking about the conflicting stories regarding Barbara Comstock and her potential shift from Mitt Romney to Fred Thompson -- reported yesterday by the New Hampshire Insider and refuted by Chris Cillizza at The Fix. Chris also had a couple of posts about John McCain and his efforts to reshuffle the deck at his campaign, both...

Here is the second half of my conversation with Duncan Hunter on the inaugural installment of the daily CQ Radio show. Part 1 can be found here. EM: Let’s move on to the borders. Now, you live nearby the border in southern California, and obviously this is an issue politically. How susceptible are we on the southern border to terrorist infiltration because of our border situation? DH: Well, we’re very susceptible to infiltration of anything because we have essentially open borders, except for the small area in California where I built the double border fence. Let me tell you, as a congressman who represented that area, what we had in the mid-1980s was basically a no-man’s-land between San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico. In that area, what I call Smuggler’s Corridor #1, was the area through which most of the people and most of the narcotics that came into the...
Part of the effort for my new position at Blog Talk Radio involves building the community of conservative radio hosts at BTR. Since all of us are bloggers, creating a central blog to highlight the hosts, their blogs, and a new narrative made the most sense. We have launched Heading Right, which we hope to create as its own destination for hot links and hot debate among the conservative and libertarian BTR hosts. And we have a great start on building that stable of writers! Here are the bloggers we already have: Rick Moran Fausta Pam Oshry Jim Lynch David Odeen Jenn Mac Kit Jarrell Mike Ryan Douglas Gibbs Jaco Pastorius With a line-up like this -- and the writers we will be adding -- the conversation will get heated in no time! Be sure to keep up with the latest from your favorite BTR hosts at Heading Right. You...
Today's installment of CQ Radio will feature one of my good friends in the blogosphere, Rick Moran of the Right Wing Nut House. Rick has written excellent commentary for serious conservatives for the last few years at his site, and he has now joined Blog Talk Radio as a show host. Today we'll pick Rick's brain on a number of issues he covers at his site and talk about his new BTR show. I especially want to talk about his criticism of the Pentagon over the way they handled the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch stories. We'll also talk about the launch of Heading Right, the new group blog for conservative BTR hosts, and what we plan to build at the new site. Rick and I join an excellent group of bloggers at HR, which will feature fresh content and commentary as well as discussions about upcoming shows. Be...

For today's installment of CQ Radio, we'll talk with Chris Muir, the cartoonist behind Day By Day. Chris does not shy away from controversy, and his entry for today shows that he likes to challenge taboos on both right and left. We are going to discuss the firestorm that erupted with today's cartoon, plus Chris' trip to Iraq, his philosophy for his art, the use of suggestive imagery in defense of conservatism, and much, much more. Be sure to join the conversation today by calling 646-652-4889! BUMP: To top....

UPDATE: NZ couldn't make it today, but hopefully we can get together on Monday. Michael and I had an excellent conversation, and James Boyce called from MS-NBC and talked about the Democratic debates. You can listen to the entire download at this link -- just as you can with all CQ Radio and BTR shows. Today's installment of CQ Radio (2 pm CT) welcomes Michael Zak, author and blogger. He has a message for the Republican Party and that message is Back To Basics. He blogs at the Grand Old Partisan, and joins us in the first half to discuss how the Republicans need to proceed in order to regain power. We'll also talk again with NZ Bear from the Victory Caucus to discuss the developments yesterday in the Senate. We'll talk about Joe Lieberman, the two Republican defections, what we can expect from the President and when, and what...

Today's installment of CQ Radio (2 pm CT) welcomes NZ Bear from the Victory Caucus to discuss the developments yesterday in the Senate. We'll talk about Joe Lieberman, the two Republican defections, what we can expect from the President and when, and what we can do to make a difference. NZ's been able to reschedule for today, and we'll get an update on the progress of the Iraq supplemental as well as discuss Sam Brownback's alliance with Joe Biden to split Iraq into three proto-states. Be sure to join us at 646-652-4889! We'd love to get you into the conversation. And make sure you're keeping up with the conversation at Heading Right!...

In today's installment of CQ Radio, I will be reviewing a blogger conference call with the White House and Tony Snow. I'll review the hot stories of day, and announcing the Heading Right debate coverage for Thursday. I may have a couple of surprise guests as well, so tune in! Join the conversation by calling 646-652-4889. BREAKING: The President will make a statement today at 6:10 PM ET today explaining why he will veto the supplemental. The White House will transmit the veto to Congress tomorrow, and the House will vote to override in the morning. They'll lose, and the White House will meet the Congressional leadership later that day to determine how to proceed....

The first Republican presidential primary debate airs tomorrow night at 7 pm CT -- and Blog Talk Radio and Heading Right will team up to cover it. The entire team at Heading Right will be posting live at the site, offering a running conversation as the 90-minute debate progresses. Over a dozen top conservative BTR hosts will debate the debate, live, at the site. Some will also live-blog the debate on their home blogs. At 9 pm CT, about thirty minutes after the end of the event, we will launch Debate Central, a new debate forum for BTR. I will moderate a post-debate roundtable with a number of BTR hosts for 30 minutes. We'll talk about the highs and lows, who gained and who lost ground, and the impact on the early primary efforts. We can even take your calls, live, to address how you felt about the debates --...
Today on CQ Radio, we will speak with Josh Holmes, the spokesman for the Senate Republican Communication Office, to talk about the veto, the Iraq war funding, and what we can expect over the next few days. You can speak with Josh and myself by calling 646-652-4889 between 2-3 pm CT this afternoon! UPDATE AND BUMP: The House failed to override the veto. I'll post the final vote. If Nancy Pelosi couldn't hold the original 218 votes, that will be a significant defeat for her. UPDATE II: Pelosi actually picked up four votes. The House voted 222-203 to override the veto, far short of the two-thirds necessary....

Today on CQ Radio, we will be talking with Robert Bluey of the Heritage Foundation and also of Bluey Blog in the second half of the show. We will also cover other topics in the first half, as well as take calls from you the entire hour. Be sure to call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! UPDATE: You can be sure that we will be discussing Robert Novak's unbelievably despicable column in the first part of the show today. See below....

Today on CQ Radio we will be debating the debate. NZ Bear will join us to discuss the debate, the results, the spin, and the meaning of last night's event. We will also discuss the performance of MS-NBC and The Politico, which may have staged the worst-ever presidential debate. Also, we'll talk about Hillary Clinton's new effort to de-authorize the war, which may start making its way through the Senate after Congress and the White House reach agreement on a supplemental spending bill for Iraq. I also want to talk about the new hate-crimes expansion bill that Bush has vowed to veto. NZ and I will talk with James Walker, president of Watchman Fellowship, to discuss his issues with the entire notion of hate crimes. Be sure to join the conversation at 646-652-4889 and keep the debate going!...

Bill Richardson, the Democrat whom the Republicans should fear most, will appear on BlogTalkRadio today at 1 pm ET. The hosts will take calls live for Governor Richardson at 646-652-4803. I've written about Richardson before. He has the best resumé of all the Democrats and most of the Republicans, and his extensive experience runs through both the legislative and executive branches. If the Democrats have a Bill Clinton in the wings, it's probably him. That doesn't mean Richardson is someone I would support; far from it. Richardson has run to the left so far with his campaign, but even his previous brand of moderation relies far too heavily on government solutions. However, he has generally avoided being a polarizing figure, and his ability to attract moderates and independents has been proven in New Mexico. If the Democrats are smart enough to nominate him, it would probably force the GOP to...
Today on CQ Radio, we'll be talking with Rick Moran of Right Wing Nut House. He and I both posted about the relocation of presidential primaries, and where that process will lead us. We'll also talk about the Fred factor and the latest polling in the race, including the laughable Newsweek survey. Rick has his own BlogTalkRadio show, and Rick will update us on his upcoming show. Be sure to join the conversation at 646-652-4889 and keep the debate going! BUMP: To top, and be sure to read the post about Richardson. I'm hoping to play the clip for the show....

UPDATE: If you didn't get a chance to listen to this show live, you definitely want to hear the podcast. Fausta and Val gave plenty of information about Castro's Cuba, and I had a great time just listening to the two of them talk passionately about the subject. This may be one of the most fun shows I've had. Today on CQ Radio (2 PM CT), we will be talking with Fausta of Fausta's Blog and Val Prieto of Babalublog. Today's topic -- the Cuban propaganda films that Princeton has decided to show at its Human Rights Film Festival. The first, The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil, argues that Cuba has somehow managed to successfully shift its economy from a petroleum-based energy solution. That seems to fly in the face of recent attempts by Cuba to expand its drilling in the Caribbean, which we noted here almost...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll be talking with a friend and a colleague of mine in the world of syndicated radio, Duane Patterson -- known as the Generalissimo on the Hugh Hewitt show. Duane and I will talk about the talk industry and the attempts by Democrats to kill it with the Fairness Doctrine, his views on the direction of political talk, as well as the Al Sharpton comments about Mormons, the Fort Dix terrorist plot, and other topics as well. Be sure to call 646-652-4889 to talk to Duane and me! UPDATE: We've got great guests for the rest of the week already lined up, too. Tomorrow Dr. Steven Bainbridge joins me to talk about his new book, a guide to Sarbanes-Oxley called, prosaically enough, The Complete Guide To Sarbanes-Oxley. On Friday, Matt Margolis of GOP Bloggers will talk about his newly-released look at the...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll be speaking with Dr. Steven Bainbridge -- author, blogger, and wine connoisseur extraordinaire -- about the release of his new book on Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, The Complete Guide To Sarbanes-Oxley. Having just escaped from corporate America, I have my own horror stories (well, more like annoyance stories) about SOX compliance and the burden it places on publicly-owned companies. I have not yet had a chance to read the book, but it sounds terrific, and we can pick the Professor's brain on how to make SOX compliance a less unpleasant affair -- if that's possible. We'll start with a short visit from Kit Jarrell of Euphoric Reality and the BTR show The Front Line. Kit found an interesting item about the entry point for some of the Fort Dix Six, and we'll talk about that as well as what we can expect from...
May 11, 2007
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll be speaking with Matt Margolis of GOP Bloggers to discuss his newly-released look at the new Democratic Congressional majority, titled Caucus of Corruption, which I have already begun to read. It's partisan, snarky, and a lot of fun. Be sure to join the conversation by calling 646-652-4889! On Tuesday, May 15th, CQ Radio will welcome Major John Heil, currently serving in Iraq in the 3rd MEDCOM as Public Affairs Officer. Major Heil joins us through a partnership with DVIDS, which assists in getting the front-line information out to Americans and people all over the world. We'll have plenty more guests coming your way through DVIDS, so keep an eye on our programming. One more note: Nader Elguindi has authored a book that details his experience in overcoming adversity and devastating physical injuries to requalify as a US Navy submariner. Titled My...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll be speaking with Denise McCourt, Director of Member Relations at the American Petroleum Institute, to talk about the cause of rising gasoline prices and the flurry of coverage it has received. We'll talk about the op-ed in today's LA Times which charges that Big Oil has bought the state of California and the charges leveled about price gouging. We'll also review the Norm Coleman speech and its reception here at the University of Minnesota. Be sure to join the conversation at 646-652-4889! UPDATE: Great show today; be sure to listen to the download on the sidebar player. Also, FYI: still working on comments and blog speed. My new hosting service, Pair Networks, spent an hour with me today troubleshooting the issues, and I have a handle on the problem now. I will have to make some configuration and procedure changes, and...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll be speaking with Major John Heil, live from Iraq, where he's currently serving with the 3rd MEDCOM as Public Affairs Officer. He will talk about all of the wonderful work being done by the medical infrastructure of the Army in Iraq, as well as discuss other aspects of life among the Iraqis. Major Heil works for the Department of Veteran Affairs in civilian life. Do you want to talk to Major Heil? All you have to do is call 646-652-4889 between 2-3 pm CT! Tonight, Heading Right will live blog the Fox News Republican presidential debate, starting at 8 pm CT. At 10 pm CT, I will moderate a roundtable review of the debate at BlogTalkRadio's Debate Central, featuring some of our Heading Right co-bloggers. Be sure to join us! UPDATE AND BUMP: I've also written a post at Heading Right...
May 16, 2007
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk about last night's Republican debate -- and we have a lot to discuss. Was Ron Paul a nut or a classic Republican? Did Giuliani rise to the occasion, or merely rise to the bait? Did anyone have a breakout night, and can the second tier hope to break through at all? I'd love to hear your thoughts on all of these questions, and more. Call 646-652-4889 and join the conversation! UPDATE: Patrick Hynes from Ankle Biting Pundits will join me for today's show, and you can bet we'll discuss this exchange by Ron Paul and Wendell Goler: REP. PAUL: No. Non-intervention was a major contributing factor. Have you ever read the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there; we've been bombing Iraq for 10 years. We've been in the Middle East -- I think Reagan...
May 17, 2007
I'll be speaking at the Online News Association online journalism conference, and my show time overlaps with the panel presentation. Given that, I've decided to try something new and innovative -- a live broadcast of the panel presentation. I'm not sure how clear it will be, but you'll hear it the same way I do. I'll start it at 2:30 pm CT this afternoon to intro it, and it will run to 3:30, or about 2/3rds of the way through the panel. I won't be able to take calls, but be sure to tune in. You can also listen to my previous podcasts as well, including a terrific interview with Major John Heil from Iraq, or yesterday's with Patrick Hynes about the Republican debate. Also, not on BTR, but Glenn Reynolds has his podcast with "Conn Iggulden, whose new book, The Dangerous Book for Boys, takes an old-fashioned positive...
May 18, 2007
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk to Nader Elguindi, who has authored a book that details his experience in overcoming adversity and devastating physical injuries to requalify as a US Navy submariner. Titled My Decision to Live, Elguindi has directed all proceeds to benefit the Walter Reed Medical Center, where he now works as a peer counselor. I've been looking forward to interviewing Elguindi for a while now, and this should be a fascinating hour. Be sure to join the conversation by calling 646-652-4889!...
May 22, 2007
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk to John Hawkins of Right Wing News about the immigration reform package. He's advocating a turf war with Republican politicians who support the legislation, and we'll talk about the perils and pitfalls of that dynamic. We'll also pick his brain about the presidential race, especially in light of this compromise. Want to join the conversation? Call 646-652-4889! UPDATE: Great show - John's a great guest. Be sure to listen on the download. I'll be on Rick Moran's show in just a moment -- be sure to tune in!...
May 23, 2007
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk to two of my friends from the blogosphere and the media. First, we have Mark Tapscott, the editor of the Washington Examiner's editorial section and a first-class political analyst. Yesterday he wrote about the need to end careerism in Congress, which I partly rebutted and partly supported at Heading Right. We're going to discuss that with him today, and perhaps pick his brain on immigration as well. In the second half of our show, Robert Bluey of the Heritage Foundation will talk about their new position paper on the immigration compromise. It argues in ten points how the compromise undermines the rule of law in America by pointing out the worst flaws in Title VI of the bill. We'll ask him to explain the concerns and where he thinks the bill will go in the next two weeks of debate....
May 24, 2007
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk to King Banaian of SCSU Scholars about the economics of immigration and the recent CBO report. King and I both contribute to the Northern Alliance Radio shows here in the Twin Cities on Saturdays, something that we've done for over three years now. King is the chair of the St. Cloud State University Economics program, and his experience is not limited to academia. He has traveled the world as an economic advisor to nations like Ukraine. He's also a hell of a guy, and a lot of fun in conversation. You'll want to call 646-652-4889 to join ours....

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk to Duane Patterson, the Generalissimo of the Hugh Hewitt show. Duane and I will discuss the immigration reform bill, the presidential race, and the victory of the Bush administration on Iraq war funding. Be sure to join the conversation at 646-652-4889! NEXT WEEK: We have big plans for next week. CQ Radio will not air on Memorial Day, but you can download any of the previous shows from the BlogTalkRadio channel. Tuesday, I'll have a recorded interview with Senator and presidential candidate John McCain on immigration reform and the war in Iraq. On Wednesday, we'll air CQ Radio at a special time in order to air an exclusive interview with Mitt Romney from the campaign trail in Iowa. I'll be in Des Moines with the campaign as it swings through the heart of Iowa, and I will be reporting live...
May 27, 2007
This week will have CQ Radio listeners on the edge of their seats. Tuesday, I will have a one-on-one interview with Senator and presidential candidate John McCain. We'll talk about immigration, the war on terror, the surge, and much more. On Wednesday, I will go on the road to cover the Mitt Romney campaign in Iowa. While the former Massachussetts governor has not broken out in national polling, he now leads all Republican candidates among likely Iowa caucus attendees, garnering 30%. How has he done it? Let's find out together. I'll trail Romney in his campaign events, posting reports along the way. Later in the afternoon, I'll conduct a one-on-one interview with Governor Romney. And, in a CQ Radio/BlogTalkRadio first, I'll provide live coverage of Romney's open forum in Des Moines in the evening, starting around 6 pm on CQ Radio. You'll hear it as it happens on CQ...

Today, CQ Radio will take the day off for the holiday. However, I hope you will take the opportunity to listen to my interview with Nader Elguindi, the submariner who overcame the loss of a leg to requalify for the service. It's one of the most inspirational stories I've ever heard -- and a perfect Memorial Day event for the family. Don't forget my talk with Major John Heil, which I conducted live while the Major serves just outside of Baghdad. Tomorrow, I will be talking with Senator John McCain live in the second half of the show. We'll talk about immigration, Iraq, and take your calls at 646-652-4889. Wednesday I'll be reporting live from the campaign trail with Mitt Romney....
May 29, 2007
Update: We got a chance to continue the conversation past the end of the live stream. Be sure to download the podcast in order to hear Senator McCain's full interview! Today, on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk live with Senator John McCain regarding the immigration bill, his campaign for President, and the Iraq War. Senator McCain will join us in the second half of the show, and before that, we'll tackle the stories of the day. Be sure to call in at 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! You can only hear it live on CQ Radio, starting at 6 pm CT!...
May 30, 2007
I'll be trailing the Mitt Romney campaign today, reporting from a number of events that the Governor has scheduled for today in Iowa. I'll be posting at Heading Right today on Romney events, so be sure to keep checking back. (I'll probably post links to those articles here as well.) Later today, I'll get an exclusive interview with Governor Romney, where I'll probe for some of the underreported aspects of his platform, especially foreign policy, which I think has mostly been ignored. We'll have a later edition of CQ Radio with that taped interview at around 4 pm CT. At 6 pm, we'll have an additional, live CQ radio show at the Hy Vee Conference Center, where you can hear the Governor handle questions from the Iowa audience in a town-hall forum. Keep checking back here and at Heading Right for more! UPDATE: I'm starting the first live-blog at Heading...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), I'll talk with NZ Bear about developments on the immigration bill, Fred Thompson's toe-dipping, and the campaign tour in Iowa with Mitt Romney. We'll also get an update on the Victory Caucus, and take your calls. In the second half, I'll air the exclusive interview I conducted yesterday with Mitt Romney, focusing first on immigration but the rest on foreign policy. This arena gets little attention from a national media seemingly more concerned about the Mormon philosophy on the nature of God than the Romney approach to the nature of global politics and security. Given today's global challenges, this lack of interest seems rather strange -- but CQ Radio listeners will get a jump on the rest of the country when it comes to vetting Romney's policy outlook on a broad range of foreign-policy issues. The interview goes 15 minutes, and then...

My interview with John McCain earlier this week has been transcribed and is now posted at Heading Right. The Senator and I discussed the controversial comprehensive immigration-reform proposal, but also talked about Iraq and the upcoming Iowa caucuses. McCain acknowledged the difficulties in convincing people to trust that the government would actually secure the borders: EM: ... I think the issue is, for them, how to get them to trust that Congress and the enforcing agencies are actually going to follow through on those border triggers and border security triggers and employment triggers in a way that they feel safe about proceeding on to the next level. I think that this is basically saying we just don’t trust Congress to do it. SM: And that skepticism is well justified because of what happened in ’86. Look, we all love and revere Ronald Reagan. We want to do everything exactly like...
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), I'll talk with the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, who writes prolifically for their political blog, The Fix. We'll talk about the impact of the immigration bill on the McCain campaign, and the impact of Fred Thompson's toe-dipping on the entire GOP primary field. In the second half of the show, Mark Tapscott joins us to talk about the warnings of a Republican meltdown. Mark is the editorial page editor for the Examiner series of newspapers and a well-known conservative essayist and thinker. We'll talk about the Peggy Noonan piece in the Wall Street Journal and the secret hold by Jon Kyl on FOIA expansion. Be sure to call and join the conversation at 646-652-4889! Addendum: My boss talks about BlogTalkRadio on CBS's Wallstrip. And Heading Left's James Boyce will appear on MS-NBC today to provide the liberal point of view on the...

On Friday's installment of CQ Radio, I interviewed Senator John Ensign, chair of the NRSC and an important voice on the immigration debate. Ensign twice voted against cloture in the Senate showdown ten days ago, but he says he still hopes that the bill can get amended to the point where it solves our border and immigration problems. The full transcript of the interview is now up at Heading Right. I asked him several questions about immigration and his views on the bill: EM: Let’s talk about that for just a second, because there are a lot of people who are complaining is what congress should do first is just focus on border security and fixing the visa program first and then once you have established creditability on that, then the American public will be more open to the idea of things like normalization and temporary guest worker programs. Why...

Afterwards, we'll have more or less an open forum for CQ Radio listeners and CQ readers. We'll talk about whatever's on your mind. Call 646-652-4889 to start the debate! Next Thursday evening, I...

Today on CQ Radio, John Hawkins of Right Wing News returns to talk immigration. Both of us interviewed Senator John Ensign, the NRSC chair, and we'll talk about the different takes we had on our interviews. We'll also talk about John's continuing efforts to pressure Republicans in the Senate to defeat the immigration bill, and the effort in the House to work on the different issues separately. If we can, we'll even squeeze in some discussion about Jimmy Carter's latest jaw-dropping idiocy. Next Thursday evening, I will debate James Boyce of the Huffington Post at BlogTalkRadio's Debate Central at 7:30 pm ET. The topics: Fred Thompson's impact on the Republican race, and Bill Richardson's policy on Iraq. Don't miss it! Earlier today, I had the opportunity to engage in some ground-breaking journalism -- a word that I do not toss around lightly. Not only did I get a chance to bring the story of Afghanistan to readers that gets little enough coverage, we could do so in depth with a lengthy interview with Ambassador Said T. Jawad. (Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, we started late and lost the last five minutes of the interview.) Why do I consider this groundbreaking? In one sense, it breaks new ground because the Ambassador rarely gets an opportunity to speak in depth about the status of Afghanistan. Normally, all he gets are quick sound bites taken out of context, or a five-minute segment on a talking-head show in which he never gets the opportunity to speak about his country's experience in any depth at all. In this format, we can allow Ambassador Jawad to...

Whenever I have a great interview subject on CQ Radio, I get e-mails asking for transcripts. That process takes a little bit of time; my transcriber likes to make sure it gets done correctly, and of course she can't start until the show is complete. However, in the case of my interview with Ambassador Said T. Jawad of Afghanistan, many people have an interest in amplifying the remarks made by the Ambassador. One enterprising blogger, Jeff Kouba of the re-launched Peace Like A River, took on the job himself. He's transcribed the first half of the interview -- and here's a taste: CQ: Some critics in our country who are opposed to intervention in this region say that long lasting democracy is really not a possibility for Afghanistan, for Iraq, or other nations in that region, and that we should be directing our efforts in different directions. Some of my...

Jeff Kouba at the recently-relaunched Peace Like A River has transcribed and posted the second half of the transcript of my interview with Ambassador Said T. Jawad of Afghanistan. In this half, I asked Ambassador Jawad about the issues with the drug trade, whether he felt Afghanistan had been abandoned by the West, and questioned how his nation was approaching gender equality, especially in education. Ambassador Jawad gave direct and frank answers and didn't hesitate to give details: CQ: Do you feel that Afghanistan has been shortchanged in terms of support following the invasion and occupation of Iraq? Ambassador Jawad: Afghanistan is shortchanged, that's for sure. I don't know if it was after the Iraq invasion, because after the Cold War when the Soviets were gone we were also shortchanged, there was no Iraq back then. There has been underinvestment in Afghanistan. I don't know how much of that relates...

The podcast file for the John McCain interview is now up and ready for download. Senator McCain is one of the most interesting and provocative guests I have on the show -- he talks plain, and in this case, it comes through immediately. In the interview, he lashes out at Harry Reid, calling his suspension of the defense appropriation bill "unconscionable" and refers derisively to the all-nighter this week as a "publicity stunt". He also talks about his presidential campaign, which is something he refused to do with CNN, taking responsibility for the "failure" but insisting he will not withdraw. Without asking, he spoke out against any return of the Fairness Doctrine. It really is can't-miss radio. In fact, Fox News agrees -- because they taped the interview off of one of the caller lines. Keep an eye on their website and on their broadcast tonight for a clip of...

For those who have not had the opportunity to listen to the podcast of the John McCain interview yesterday, or for those who want to excerpt it for debate, the transcript is now ready at Heading Right. Even in the transcript, one gets the sense of McCain's offended sensibilities from Harry Reid's publicity stunts this week, calling the suspension of the defense authorization bill "unconscionable" and noting that the Senate has more comedy than comity in the 110th Congress. For instance, McCain made his point plain in this exchange: But then he pulls the bill down after not getting 60 votes, and guess where we are? The military does not get a three and a half percent pay raise, we don’t authorize these new types of equipment to fight IED’s, the wounded warrior legislation, the wounded war legislation was to try to fix this terrible scandal out at Walter Reed,...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), I'll review the Rasmussen data on media bias. Joining me will be my friend and St. Cloud State's chair of economics, King Banaian, who will help me plow through the implications of the crosstab data on demographics. We're going to compare that to this UCLA study from late 2005. We may also try to figure out who sponsored over $7 million in earmarks for Minnesota, including $400,000 for an "International Species Information System for the ZIMS project" in my town. King and I may also review the changes to the Venezuelan economy that threaten to end private enterprise under Hugo Chavez. Call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll talk with Thurman Gaskill of the Rudy Giuliani campaign. Today on CQ Radio (at the special time of 1 pm CT), we'll have Representive Tom Cole, chair of the National Republican Congressional Caucus, to discuss candidate recruitment and the 2008 campaign. The GOP has more hope of recapturing a majority in the House than the Senate, and we'll talk about the differences. We'll also review the new NRCC website, and their other effort, The Real Democratic Story. At the bottom of hour, we'll welcome Rick Moran of Right Wing Nut House to debate the YouTube debate and whether the GOP should participate. We'll definitely want your calls on this topic, so call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! Did you know that you can listen to CQ Radio through your TiVo service? Click here for the instructions. July 31, 2007
Yesterday on CQ Radio, I spoke with Rep. Tom Cole of the NRCC on a wide variety of topics relating to the Republican caucus in the House. However, I decided to ask Rep. Cole his opinion on the YouTube debate towards the end of the interview. I thought he might demur, given his focus on Congress rather than the presidential race, but instead he gave a rather impassioned plea for Republicans to engage in the debate. CQ Radio listener TechRepublican put together an excellent YouTube presentation: Oh, the irony! It's excellent, and it serves as a reminder that one can find something newsworthy at CQ Radio every day....
Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll have two great guests on two important policy issues. First, Phil Kerpen from Americans for Prosperity will join us to discuss the new tax increase floated by the Democrats. Kerpen will explain why this proposal will damage the American economy -- and how targeted tax cuts could generate the revenue that Congress seeks. In the second part of the hour, Dr. Scott Atlas joins us to discuss his participation on Rudy Giuliani's health-care policy team. Rudy's efforts on this are in the news today, as he pushes for private enterprise solutions rather than socialized medicine. Call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! In the second half, author Michael Mannske joins us to talk about his new novel, Foreign and Domestic: Campaign II--Battle for the Middle States, as well as his experiences in the military and the issues surrounding Iraq, Iran, and the UN. If you missed today's CQ Radio show with Stephen Hayes, you missed a great piece of fascinating history. Hayes, author of Cheney: The Untold Story of America's Most Powerful and Controversial Vice President, talked at length about the selection process that put Cheney on the ticket with George Bush in 2000. Cheney had not told Stephen who else had been considered for the position while Cheney headed the search committee prior to his own selection, but the biographer managed to find out through other channels -- and in an inadvertent exclusive, Hayes told me that one of the names was ... Chuck Hagel. If you listen to the interview, Stephen puts it into good context. Hagel has a long history of conservative votes, and at the time was considered a comer in the GOP. Imagine the ways in which history may have changed -- and how that would have affected...

Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), we'll welcome Dr Ken Thorpe of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease. Dr. Thorpe served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Policy in the Clinton administration, and his partner Mark McClellan ran the Medicare and Medicaid programs in the Bush White House. Together they believe that a serious effort at preventing and curing chronic disease will save over a hundred billion dollars a year in federal spending -- enough to solve the problem of the uninsured in America. I've posted links to coverage of this effort at Heading Right this morning -- be sure to read the background. In the second half of the show, we'll talk with my friend King Banaian of SCSU Scholars about the economics of the bridge collapse and MnDOT funding. As the country begins to debate infrastructure maintenance and funding, it helps to have St. Cloud State's...

We have a great show lined up for today! Today on CQ Radio (2 pm CT), Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) joins us to discuss the FISA legislation just passed by Congress -- and threatened again by Nancy Pelosi. The ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee will bring us up to date on why the legislation was needed, and how it is at risk now. In the second half of the show, former presidential candidate Steve Forbes will talk to us about his role in the Giuliani campaign, and what the Mayor intends to do about tax policy. Call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! UPDATE II: Great show -- I may have excerpts up...
If you missed today's edition of CQ Radio, then you missed an opportunity to hear Rep. Pete Hoekstra give an impassioned explanation of the need for the recently passed FISA legislation -- and the need to make it permanent. Here are a few of the points you missed: On Nancy Pelosi's vow to have Democrats revisit FISA after the August recess: "They've so demagogued this bill ... It's consistent with the other things Democrats are doing on a national intelligence basis and a national security basis. You know, they may decide to extend the civil liberties protections that Americans have to foreign terrorists." (08:10) Wasting intel resources: "They've asked the intelligence community to do a national intelligence estimate, which requires a lot of resources out of the intelligence community, on global warming." (08:20) On the supposed attack on civil liberties from the FISA legislation: "Ed, excuse me, if the Speaker...

We have a couple of announcements for my BlogTalkRadio show. We have a new name, Heading Right Radio with Ed Morrissey. BTR and I have decided that we want to brand the talk show name with the BTR blog brand, but that doesn't imply any shift from my blogging here at Captain's Quarters. It's designed to strengthen the brand at BTR, and since we rarely used the entire Captain's Quarters name before today, it allows for a fairly simple transition. We have some exciting guests booked for the show in the next couple of weeks. First, on Thursday we will have Michael Ledeen on tape introducing his new book, The Iranian Time Bomb: The Mullah Zealots' Quest for Destruction. Roger Simon took a few minutes last week to interview me at Pajamas Media headquarters, and we talked about how easily people can become their own hosts at BlogTalkRadio. We also talked about PJM's new gig at XM Radio, in which we will participate, indirectly at first. The PJM media department did a nice job with this video -- and it was a pleasure meeting the PJM staff on my West Coast tour....

We'll walk through a couple of earmarks and take your calls for more exploration. In the second half of the show, NRO's Jim Geraghty joins me to talk about the Republican refusal to engage in the PBS debate. I think the Republican candidates should do some party-building and engaging black voters. What do you think? Call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! And don't forget to join our chat room, too! I've finished the interview with Newt Gingrich, and you won't want to miss this show. I'll be playing the interview on my Heading Right show at 3 pm CT, and Newt provides his no-holds-barred commentary on current politics. Here are a few quotes to pique your interest: On Republican consultants: "Let me be clear. I think Republican consultants are mostly very stupid. I think they have no education. I think they have no sense of history." On African-American voters: "No group in America has been served worse by government than the African-American community." Also, this: "Other than Huckabee, none of these [Republican] candidates have the gumption to place themselves in the middle of that [African-American] environment ..." On the current crop of candidates: "The most sobering thing about where we are right now is that the most effective candidate in the race is -- Hillary Clinton. ... Her answers are...
Today on Heading Right Radio (2 pm CT), I'll play an interview with Newt Gingrich that I will record this morning. I've just arrived at the Cobb Galleria (10:45 am ET), and we're waiting for a blogger interview with the former Speaker. Originally, each of us was to get one-on-one time with Newt, but his schedule got booked up quickly. Rob Bluey, Matt Lewis, and I will do a round-robin interview in the next few minutes. I'll replay it at the top of the hour, and I may have Rob and Matt join me for the show to discuss the event. Due to my travel schedule today, Heading Right Radio will take a day off. Instead, I'd recommend taking a listen to last night's special prime-time broadcast recapping my dinner with Justice Clarence Thomas. Tomorrow, I'll celebrate the blog's 4th anniversary in my normal time slot of 2 pm CT! UPDATE & BUMP, 1:45 ET: I'm enjoying a layover in Charlotte, which gave me time to post another couple of entries below. It's amazing how much one airport resembles another. I had to hit the restroom, and the stall had this note: TAP DANCE 4 LOVE! It's like I never left Minneapolis .... I've gone through a third of the Clarence Thomas memoir, and so far, it's fascinating. With any luck, I'll finish it before I get home. In the meantime, Danny Glover has a roundup of reactions to Clarence Thomas, his book, Anita Hill's response, and so on. UPDATE II:...

In the second half of the hour, David Andelman joins us to talk about his new book, A Shattered Peace: Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today. It's a topic on which I've already done quite a bit of reading, but the executive editor of Forbes.com has a fresh look at the impact that the Great War had on the world -- and why it matters to this day. He also has an excellent website for the book, with an extra chapter for on-line readers, and a blog as well. Call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation! And don't forget to join our chat room! Today on Heading Right Radio (2 pm CT), Duane "Generalissimo" Patterson of the Hugh Hewitt Show joins us to review the week -- and what a week it was! We'll want to talk about Clarence Thomas' new book and the reaction it received, the continuing huffery over the deliberate misinterpretation of Rush Limbaugh's remarks and what that means to conservative talkers, the sharp decline in combat deaths for Iraqis and Americans and how the media mostly missed that story, and much much more! Bill Paxon joins us at the bottom of the hour to handicap today's GOP debate. The Rudy Giuliani advisor tells us what to expect from the frontrunner while all eyes remain on Fred Thompson. Today on Heading Right Radio (2 pm CT), we have two great guests. Grover Norquist from Americans for Tax Reform joins us in the first half to talk about the Leave Us Alone coalition, as he describes them. I met Grover at the CLC-07 conference and he gave a great speech about limited government, and how lowering taxes can force reduction in its reach. He also noted that reduced revenue can act to split apart the liberal coalition by forcing it to fight each other over the scraps. In the second half of the show, our friend Robert Bluey from the Heritage Foundation joins us to discuss his latest column on media coverage of the war, as well as the CLC and Ron Paul's impact on it, and more on tax and spending policies that will erupt in the remainder of this session of Congress. Allen Zeng runs the Sounds of Hope Radio Network, which "developed tools to penetrate China's firewall and bring out tens of millions of hits per day. Today on Heading Right Radio (2 pm CT), we will hear from the authors of Deception: Pakistan, the United States, and the Secret Trade in Nuclear Weapons. Adrian Levy and Catherine Scott-Clark of the Guardian lay out the case that the US and its allies enabled the Pakistani nuclear program through every administration since Jimmy Carter, and have a large responsibility for the proliferation that resulted. They argue that the US has ignored and altered intelligence that warned of these consequences for thirty years and has tied itself to a nation that hardly qualifies as an ally to the West. NOTE: Newer posts may appear below this, which will stay on top until the show begins at 2 pm CT. Today on Heading Right Radio (2 pm CT), Paul Jacob joins us to talk about his felony prosecution in Oklahoma for the crime of circulating a petition to get an initiative on the ballot. Paul faces years in prison for attempting to limit the size of Oklahoma's state budget. Don't miss this curious tale to see why Jacob represents such a threat to the peace of Oklahoma -- at least according to the state AG. In the second half of the show, Michael Goldfarb of the Weekly Standard will talk about the Scott Beauchamp/TNR debacle -- how it started, how Michael and Bob Owens pressed for answers, and how TNR still refuses to stop stonewalling. BTR host Rick Moran will be my co-host today! Call 646-652-4889 to join the conversation!...
What you may have missed in the Heading Right Radio show today ... Earlier today, I wrote about the prosecution of Paul Jacob by Oklahoma for his involvement in circulating petitions for a ballot initiative. The law in question forbids anyone except Oklahoma residents from seeking signatures on political petitions. Because Jacob, as a backer of tax reform, helped organize the Taxpayer Bill of Rights initiative in Oklahoma and the petition circulators didn't meet the residency requirements (more on that in a moment), the Oklahoma AG charged Jacob and two others with a single count of conspiracy to break that law -- which carries a potential 10-year sentence. We knew that from this morning. What we didn't know, and what we found out during our interview with Jacob, is that none of the circulators have been charged with a crime. Why? It seems that residency requirements are so nebulous as...

That's the question Joan Rivers used to ask in her stand-up routines, but these days, it seems more appropriate to ask in a political context. After completing a fascinating hour with Danny Glover of Air Congress and Joe Gandelman of The Moderate Voice, the answer seems to be "maybe". Both men discussed with me the trials and tribulations they experience in reaching across the political divide at their sites, but how they see that as crucial to forming policy. When speaking with Danny, we talked about the echo-chamber tendencies in the blogosphere. He worries about government agencies going to friendly bloggers for outreach rather than a broader engagement, hoping to shield themselves from scrutiny, but the practice extends much more clearly to political candidates. This makes some sense, especially in the primaries, as campaign building, but it does nothing to address the differences between philosophies and parties and look for...

Why has the pejorative "prude" taken on worse connotations than "slut"? Why do preadolescent girls now routinely dress in provocative clothing that would have given pause to adult women a generation ago -- and how does that harm girls and women? Rick Moran of Right Wing Nut House (and BTR!) joins us in the second half to talk about his post about Ron Paul, the Hillary Clinton meltdown, the LA Times non-story, and more! Bolton lays it on the line on BTR, so be sure to hear it for yourself....
Note: This post will remain on top until show time; newer posts may be found below. Today on Heading Right Radio (2 pm CT), we'll reach across the aisle to talk with TalkLeft's Jeralyn Merritt.
